2011 Spokane Indians Season Recap
The season kicked off on June 17th with fireworks and a sold-out crowd, and got into full swing four days later when the Indians unveiled their new mascot, Doris the Spokanasaurus, and first-round pick Zach Cone in their 15-8 win. Doris, who is sponsored by Shriners Hospitals for Children, quickly became a fan favorite with her dance moves, bubbly personality, and confetti showers.
The first big giveaway came on July 7th when Bob and Michelle Olson won $10,000 as a part of 10K's for $10K Night presented by Banner Bank and 103.1 KCDA. Spokane pitchers David Perez, Sam Robinson, Matt West, and Kyle Hendricks combined to strike out thirteen Vancouver Canadians in the Indians 4-3 walk-off win.
Spokane got two more game-winners in the span of four days during late-July, as first baseman Trever Adams twice came through in the clutch with walk-off hits against Boise on July 18th and Tri-City on July 21st, keeping the Indians in the thick of the Northwest League playoff chase.
One of the most dramatic and memorable games in the history of Avista Stadium took place on July 28th, as Ruben Sierra's walk-off grand slam not only won the game for Spokane, but also a brand new truck for Indians fan Leslie Vancil during Grand Slam F-150 Giveaway Night presented by Gus Johnson Ford and KISS 98.1.
The most touching moment of the season came on August 8th when Sgt. Chris Weichman, who had just returned from his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, surprised his family on the field after they competed in The Spokesman-Review Newspaper Toss, an on-field promotion that takes place between innings. The story gained national attention, and was featured on MLB.com, The Huffington Post, and ABC News.
The 2011 season concluded on September 3rd with another picturesque night at Avista Stadium, as fireworks and a 4-2 win capped off a great year of Indians baseball. For the year, Spokane drew 183,548 fans to their games, marking the 13th consecutive season that the Indians lead the NWL in attendance.
The Indians finished the season with a 35-41 overall record, including an impressive 25-13 ledger at the friendly confines of Avista Stadium.
