Winning Streak Gets Sky Sox Back in the Race

May 24, 2007
By John Meyer

All good things must eventually come to an end. For the Colorado Springs Sky Sox it was their seven-game winning streak that ended last week against the Memphis Redbirds. The streak began May 7 in Portland and when it was over the Sky Sox had defeated three teams from two different Pacific Coast League divisions for their longest winning streak since the 2005. The winning streak helped the Sky Sox climb out of last place in the PCL Pacific Division and move into second place behind the Salt Lake Bees.

Hot hitting and a strong bullpen were keys for the Sky Sox during the streak. Third baseman Ian Stewart hit .384 with ten RBI, first baseman Joe Koshansky hit .409 with six runs and four RBI and outfielder Ryan Spilborghs added 10 hits and 5 runs. The entire Sky Sox bullpen had at least one appearance during the streak and Ramon Ramirez and LaTroy Hawkins, both on rehabilitation assignments from the Rockies, contributed as well. Overall, the bullpen threw 23 1/3 innings, allowed only eight runs and picked up three wins.

The seven-game winning streak ties for the seventh longest winning streak in Sky Sox history. The franchise record for the longest winning streak is 14 games by the 1995 PCL champion Sky Sox. The 1992 PCL champion Sky Sox have the third longest winning streak in franchise history at ten games.

The 2007 Sky Sox team struggled in the first month of the season. With five home games postponed due to the weather and numerous pitchers called up to Colorado the team was never able to get into a consistent day-to-day game schedule and it showed in their record as they went 7-14 in April.

Things turned around for the Sky Sox when the calendar turned to May. As of May 23, the Sky Sox are 14-7 in the month. The Sky Sox wrapped up their successful home stand last week but struggled on their return to the road, winning just one game out of four in Sacramento. Monday, they returned home to start up another eight-game home stand against Fresno and Sacramento. This home stand got off to a good start with 7-6 and 12-4 victories over the Fresno Grizzlies.
