Twins' Mains earns Appy League award

September 28, 2011
ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. -- Elizabethton Twins general manager Mike Mains has been named Appalachian League Executive of the Year.

Mains, who has held his post for 13 years, also won the Executive of the Year award in 2001, 2005 and 2006.

The award is selected by league managers, general managers and Umpires. It is based on several categories, including marketing, game day operations, community relations, business operations, facility management and public relations.

"It's a tremendous honor to receive this award on behalf of our entire staff and to be recognized by such a wonderful group of professionals in this league," Mains said. "Through the years, I've been extremely fortunate to have been able to watch and learn from so many of my colleagues. This experience, along with the hard work and dedication that our entire staff produced this past season, is truly the reason for this award."

"We can all learn a valuable lesson in this profession by spending one day with Mike Mains, observing his kindness, hospitality and hard work ethic," said Appalachian League president Lee Landers. "The leadership and direction Mike has given the Elizabethton Twins over the years is a fitting example of a true professional."

Operated by the City of Elizabethton, the Twins have seen their share of challenges during these tough economic times. Funding for stadium improvements has slowed through the years, and in one of the smallest venues in Minor League baseball the franchise has faced its share of economic challenges.

"Over the last few years, we've had to get creative with sales and promotional events. And in doing so, it seems we have brought this community together during some tough times," said Mains.

Elizabethton continued to team up with local non-profit organizations, created additional theme nights and planned numerous community events such as beauty pageants, pregame concerts and events such as dog shows, cow milking and health fairs that would attract all segments of the local population.

"I feel extremely fortunate to serve as the parks and recreation department director and as the general manager for the Elizabethton Twins," Mains said. "We had a great season, due in part to the continued support from our fan base and a staff that did a tremendous job providing our community with a wonderful Minor League baseball experience."
