Kjeldgaard powers Canada past U.S.
The Milwaukee prospect homered, doubled and drove in four runs Sunday as Canada shut down the United States, 6-1, at the IBAF World Cup in Panama.
A 2005 35th-round Draft pick, Kjeldgaard hit .270 with 24 homers and 76 RBIs in 126 games between Class A Advanced Brevard County and Double-A Huntsville. He put Canada in front with three-run homer in the third inning, then doubled home an insurance run in the ninth.
Padres outfield prospect Matt Clark drove in the lone run for Team USA, drilling a solo homer in the seventh. Cubs top prospect Brett Jackson was the only U.S. player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot.
Major League veteran Shawn Hill (2-0) earned the win after allowing one run on three hits over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked one.
Braves farmhand Todd Redmond (0-1) gave up three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 frames and was saddled with the loss.
At 3-3, Team USA will need help to move on to the second round of the tournament. Chinese Taipei (0-5) must beat Puerto Rico (3-3) on Sunday night, while the Americans would have to defeat Panama (6-0) on Monday.
NOTES: Big league veteran Joe Thurston (Marlins) singled in the first inning, giving him at least one hit in each of the five World Cup games in which he has played. He leads the team with a .429 average. ... Clark leads the team with three homers. ...
