David Freese- Stormin' the Series

October 17, 2011
As we approach the World Series, former Storm David Freese is showing the nation what Storm fans have known since 2007-he can hit. David was recently named the NLCS MVP and is having a stellar postseason as the third baseman for the Cardinals; hitting .425 with four home runs and 14 RBI in 11 games played this October. Freese was an All-Star with the Storm in 2007 when he hit .302 with 17 HR and 96 RBI for Lake Elsinore.

After the 2007 season, the Padres traded David to the Cardinals for Jim Edmonds (who rehabbed for the Storm as an Angel and later a Padre). He spent the 2008 season in AAA for the Memphis Redbirds and was expected to play a role in the major leagues for the Cardinals in 2009. Freese did begin the 2009 season at third base for the Cardinals but he wasn't the mainstay they were hoping. Injuries changed those plans and he spent some time in the minors before rejoining St. Louis in September of that year.

2010 was more of the same for the Texas native. David began that season as the starting third baseman but went through two ankle surgeries and missed a majority of the MLB season. David started the 2011 season off hot, hitting .320, before being hit in the hand and missing 51 games. After rejoining the team, he finished the season with an average of .297, ten home runs and 55 RBI.

The Cardinals, with Albert Pujols and Matt Holiday, weren't necessarily looking for a lesser-named hero in the 2011 postseason. So far, they have gotten one in the form of the Storm alum. Freese drove in four runs to beat the Phillies and force a game five in the first round. As if that wasn't enough, the eventual NLCS MVP hit .545 with three home runs and nine RBI to help his team beat the favored Brewers and advance to the World Series.

The Cardinals take on the Texas Rangers in the World Series beginning on Wednesday, October 19 and Freese will be in the lineup as the starting third baseman for the National League Champions.
