Fans Vote Fisher Cats Best Double-A Team

October 21, 2011

Manchester, N.H. - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, added another honor to their 2011 trophy case. After weeks of voting, fans voted the Fisher Cats the 'Best Double-A Team' in the year-end MiLBY Awards through the official website of Minor League Baseball, MiLB.com. The 2011 Eastern League Champions took home 35 percent of the fan vote, beating out Southern League runner-up, the Tennessee Smokies.

"We want to thank our fans, the best in the country, who recognized the hard work and success of our team this season," said Rick Brenner, Fisher Cats President and General Manager. "This speaks to the budding talent that permeates the entire player development system of our Major League partner, the Toronto Blue Jays."

The Fisher Cats took home their second Eastern League Championship - and first since 2004 - by rattling off 77 wins during the regular season, second most in the league. After clinching the Northern Division Title, thanks in part to a team-record 23 wins in May, the Fisher Cats defeated the Reading Phillies 3-to-1 to advance to the Eastern League Finals. In the championship round, a game one loss was followed by three successive victories over the Richmond Flying Squirrels to take home the hardware.

In addition to the championship, the 2011 season was full of personal accolades for the Fisher Cats. Manager Sal Fasano was named the top skipper in the Eastern League, the first time that's happened for a Fisher Cats manager since Mike Basso took home the honor in 2004. Fasano's everyday backstop, catcher Travis d'Arnaud, was named the league's Most Valuable Player. The Long Beach, California, native was also named to both the midseason and postseason All-Star teams while being named the Eastern League's Best Defensive Catcher by Baseball America.

A total of seven Fisher Cats, a new club record, were elected to participate in the Northeast Delta Dental Eastern League All-Star Game held at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in July. This contingent of players included first baseman Mike McDade, who beat outfielder and fellow Fisher Cat Moises Sierra in the Bonneville & Son Home Run Derby.

Tickets are available now for the 2011 Granite State Baseball Dinner presented by Northeast Delta Dental on November 19 at the Radisson Expo Center in Manchester. The fundraising gala features a celebrity-laden guest list including St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter, Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and Boston Bruins legend Terry O'Reilly, plus many more.
