Jeremy Hellickson Named Baseball America's Rookie of the Year
Former Bull Jeremy Hellickson was named the Rookie of the Year by Baseball America this past week. Hellickson went 13-10 with a 2.95 ERA in 29 starts for the Rays. He logged 189 innings allowing just 146 hits in the regular season.
His 189 innings were third on the Rays trailing only James Shields (249.1) and David Price (224.1). Hellickson is the first Rays player to be named Rookie of the Year by Baseball America and just the seventh pitcher to win the award since it was created in 1989.
Hellickson was a member of the Bulls pitching staff in both 2009 and 2010, and was named the International League pitcher of the year following the 2010 campaign. He went 12-3 in 2010 with the Bulls and posted a 2.45 ERA, while striking out 123 in 117.1 innings of work.
Hellickson was a late season call-up following the 2010 season and made his major league debut on August 2 against the Minnesota Twins. He made four starts for the Rays in 2010 before moving to the bullpen on September 1 and appeared in a total of 10 games. He finished the season 4-0 at the major league level with a 3.47 ERA.
Hellickson went a combined in 30 starts, and entered the 2011 ranked by Baseball America as the sixth best prospect.
