Poveda burns Cougars

Omar Poveda pitched seven strong innings as Clinton beat visiting Kane County, 3-1, on Tuesday.

Poveda (7-2) allowed one run on five hits and a walk with eight strikeouts to lower his ERA to 2.63. The 19-year-old right-hander from Venezuela is 6-1 with a 1.69 ERA in seven home starts. Brennan Garr walked one in two scoreless frames for his third save.

Manuel Pina led off the third with his first homer of the season and K.C. Herren and Jay Heafner added run-scoring singles in the fourth for the LumberKings (39-23). Marcus Lemon went 0-for-4, snapping an 11-game hitting streak.

Cougars starter John Herrera (2-6) yielded three runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts over six frames.

Greg Dowling had an RBI single in the sixth for Kane County (20-44), which has dropped two in a row after a five-game winning streak. --Alan Friedman/MLB.com
