Former Loon Clayton Kershaw Wins N.L. Cy Young
MIDLAND, MI - On Thursday, November 17, Major League Baseball announced former Loon Clayton Kershaw as the National League Cy Young recipient, the highest individual award given to pitchers for a single season's effort. Kershaw becomes the eighth Dodger to receive the award and joins a prestigious list of Dodgers pitchers that includes Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Fernando Valenzuela, and Orel Hershiser.
In 2011, the Dodgers' left-handed ace led the all of Major League Baseball with a 2.28 ERA and finished with the National League Triple Crown, leading N.L. pitchers in ERA, wins (21) and strikeouts (248). In 33 starts for Los Angeles, Kershaw pitched five complete games, two for shutouts. Kershaw limited opposing hitters to a .207 batting average, which was the best in the league.
Kershaw finished with personal single-season bests in wins, ERA, strikeouts, complete games, shutouts, games started (33) and innings pitched (233.1).
Kershaw was a member of the inaugural Loons team in 2007 and finished his tenure with Great Lakes boasting a 2.77 ERA and a 7-5 record. He compiled 134 strikeouts in 97.1 innings pitched as a Loon and earned Prospect of the Year honors from the Midwest League. He was selected to the league's All-Star Game, where he finished as the game's winning pitcher, was named a postseason All-Star, and also took part in the MLB Futures Game in San Francisco. The following season, he became the first former Loon to debut in Major League Baseball.
Prior to the season, the Great Lakes Loons and Deloitte announced their continued partnership in the K's for Kids program, which benefits various non-profit organizations of the Great Lakes Bay Region by donating $5 for every strikeout recorded by Loons pitchers. In addition, Deloitte announced before the season that they would donate $5 for every strikeout recorded by Kershaw. The 248 K's from the Dodgers lefty, plus the 1,097 rattled off by Loons pitchers in 2011, bring Deloitte's final game-related contributions in 2011 to $6,725. The five area non-profits benefiting from the 2011 K's for Kids Program are the Saginaw Bay Youth Orchestra, Imagination Library, Railway Family Center, Safe & Sound Child Advocacy Center, and the Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan.
The Great Lakes Loons are a sixth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of their 5th Anniversary Celebration, which kicked off in August 2011 and will continue throughout the 2012 season. The Loons ticket staff is currently taking orders for ticket packages and group outings for 2012. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
