Whataburger Begins Holiday Ornament Sale
In the spirit of the season, Whataburger has begun its Second Annual Holiday Ornament Sale benefiting the Miracle League of Corpus Christi.
Proceeds from the sale of paper ornaments, priced at $1, go directly to the CITGO Miracle League Field, located at 1354 Airport Road (across from Gabe Lozano Golf Course). Miracle League playing surfaces are flat, rubberized and cushioned, affording special needs children the opportunity to play regardless of ability. Wheelchair-bound or visually-impaired players also benefit from accessible dugouts.
Whataburger hopes to sell 40,000 ornaments from its Coastal Bend restaurants by Christmas Eve. The company has partnered with the Miracle League of Corpus Christi for five years, raising more than $86,000 through various fundraising efforts.
Annual South Texas Winter Baseball Banquets and Astros Caravan Luncheons from 2007-09 benefited the Miracle League project under the Corpus Christi Hooks Field of Dreams program. In September of 2009, a "Miracle Dinner Under the Lights" at Whataburger Field featuring future Hall-of-Famer Craig Biggio pushed fundraising past the threshold for construction.
Whataburger has focused on its fresh, made-to-order burgers and friendly customer service since 1950 when Harmon Dobson opened the first Whataburger as a small roadside burger stand in Corpus Christi, Texas. Dobson gave his restaurant a name he hoped to hear customers say every time they took a bite of his made-to-order burgers: "What a burger!" Within the first week, people lined up around the block for his 25 cent, all-American beef burgers served on five-inch buns. Today, the company is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, with more than 700 locations in 10 states with sales of more than $1 billion annually.
