Giants' Draft pick Stiner suspended
Stiner, a catcher who has not yet appeared in a Minor League game, received a 50-game suspension after testing positive for an amphetamine, a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
The suspension will be effective at the start of the 2012 season, depending on where Stiner is assigned.
Stiner, a catcher who had committed to Oklahoma State before signing with San Francisco, was drafted out of Owasso (Okla.) High School after hitting .370 with five home runs and 35 RBIs in helping his team, which went 36-2, finish as the state runner-up last year. He's known for a strong arm and also saw time at third base and on the mound in 2011.
His teammate at Owasso, pitcher Dylan Bundy, was also drafted last June as the No. 4 overall pick by the Baltimore Orioles.
Stiner is the second player in 2012 to receive a suspension for a drug program violation, joining Nationals right-hander Zech Zinicola, who was suspended Jan. 5 after testing positive for a drug of abuse for a second time. MLB suspended 69 players under the Minor League drug program in 2011.
