ARLINGTON, Texas - Bobby Jones will return for his 23rd season as a manger in the Texas Rangers farm system in 2012, the parent club of the Round Rock Express announced Thursday. Jones will be in his 11th season as manager of the Rangers' Triple-A affiliate and second season with the Express.
The Rangers also announced the promotion of Brant Brown to hitting coach for the Express. Brown held the same position with Double-A Frisco the last three seasons. Pitching coach Terry Clark, third-base coach Spike Owen, athletic trainer Jason Roberts and strength coach Ric Mabie also return on the Express staff.
Additionally, the Rangers announced the addition of Randy Ready as the organization's hitting coordinator and Vinny Lopez, Justin Mashore and Humberto Miranda as coaches. Jake Krug also has been promoted to Director of Minor League Operations after serving as assistant director of player development the last two seasons. Krug joins Rangers Senior Director of Player Development Tim Purpura, new field coordinator Jayce Tinger and pitching coordinator Danny Clark to form the club's player development leadership team.
Jones earned 2011 Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year honors after guiding Round Rock to its first division title since 2006. He claimed his 1,500th career victory and led the Express to a franchise-record 87 wins in 2011. He is the most-tenured coach in the Rangers organization, the franchise that drafted him in 1967 as the Washington Senators. Jones has enjoyed two stints on the Rangers coaching staff, most recently in 2006.
Brown is in his sixth season with the Rangers organization. He spent two seasons as hitting coach at Class-A Bakersfield before moving to Frisco. An All-American at Fresno State, Brown was a third-round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs in 1992. He played nine seasons in the Majors with stops in Chicago (NL), Pittsburgh and Florida.
Clark returns for his fourth season as pitching coach for the Rangers Triple-A affiliate. He pitched in parts of six seasons for seven Major League teams - the Angels (1988, 1989), Astros (1990, 1996), Orioles (1995), Braves (1995), Royals (1996), Rangers (1997) and Indians (1997). Clark served as a pitching coach in the Indians farm system from 2000 to 2004, and was pitching coach for Double-A Frisco in the Rangers organization from 2006 to 2008.
Owen also is no stranger to Central Texas, having starred at the University of Texas in the early 1980s and serving as a member of the Express coaching staff from 2002 to 2006. He was the sixth overall selection in the 1982 draft by the Seattle Mariners and spent 13 seasons in the Majors with the Mariners, Red Sox, Expos, Yankees and Angels.
The Express begin their 13th season and eighth season as a PCL member Thursday, April 5, 2012, at Iowa. Round Rock's home schedule begins Friday, April 13, as the Express host the Iowa Cubs and Omaha Storm Chasers in consecutive four-game series.
