"The Sea Dogs are very excited to host two top notch collegiate baseball teams; the University of Maine Black Bears and the Boston College Eagles at Hadlock Field," stated Sea Dogs Executive Vice President and General Manager Geoff Iacuessa. "This is a great opportunity for the fans in southern Maine to catch the high caliber play of Division I collegiate baseball in their own backyard."
"This a great opportunity for our team to play at a first rate minor league facility and face a challenging opponent," stated University of Maine Associate Athletic Director for External Operations Joe Roberts. "Thank you to the Sea Dogs ownership for helping to put it together. I hope many of our fans and alums will come out to see some high caliber college baseball."
The University of Maine has a rich baseball tradition. The Black Bears have an all-time record of 1800-1408-17. Maine has participated in 16 NCAA Regionals and made seven College World Series appearances. Maine won the 2011 America East Championship and then defeated 20th ranked Florida International University in the Chapel Hill Regional. Maine returns seven starters and 18 letter winners from that squad.
The University of Maine baseball program has produced several Major League players including Mike Bordick and Billy Swift. Additionally, the Sea Dogs have had two former Black Bears don the Sea Dogs uniform; Pete Fisher (2005) and Rusty Tucker (2006).
"Playing in Portland at Hadlock Field is a great opportunity for our program," stated Boston College Head Baseball Coach Mike Gambino. "Portland has a great reputation for great baseball fans, so on top of being able to play in one of the best minor league parks in the country; we get to play in front of some great fans. The greater Portland area also has a large contingency of BC fans and alumni so being able to get them to a game will be a lot of fun for our players. On top of that, some of our players are from Maine and they are able to play a game in front of their friends and family."
Boston College baseball started in 1946 and has made four College World Series appearances. The last time the Eagles made the NCAA Tournament was in 2009, when they went to the Austin Regional and battled Texas in a 25-inning dual, the longest game in NCAA history. Mike Gambino is in his second year as the head coach of BC. Last season, Gambino led the Eagles to a 17-33 record. A middle infielder from 1997-2000 for the Eagles, he was named first team All-Big East, All-Northeast and All-New England as a player. The Eagles return 13 position players, eight pitchers and welcome 10 newcomers in 2012.
