Cats' Overbay slams Sea Dogs

Rehabbing big leaguer drives in five runs in 6-5 victory
July 8, 2007
Lyle Overbay hit a grand slam and knocked in five runs in the second game of his rehab assignment Saturday as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats edged the Portland Sea Dogs, 6-5.

One night after going 0-for-5, Overbay launched a fifth-inning slam off reliever Kyle Jackson to give the Fisher Cats a 6-3 lead. The Toronto Blue Jays first baseman also doubled home Manuel Mayorson in the fourth.

Overbay was hit on the right hand by Chicago White Sox left-hander John Danks on June 3 and was placed on the 15-day disabled list two days later. The 30-year-old was hitting .256 with eight homers and 27 RBIs in 207 at-bats. He was coming off a career year in which he batted .311 with 22 homers and 92 RBIs.

This is Overbay's first Minor League appearance since he played 35 games for Triple-A Tucson of the Pacific Coast League in 2003.

New Hampshire starter Eric Fowler (2-1) allowed three runs on five hits over five innings with a strikeout and a walk. Tracy Thorpe retired the final five batters for his sixth save after Seth Overbey allowed one run over 1 2/3 frames.

Jackson (3-5) has surrendered grand slams in back-to-back outings -- both against New Hampshire (47-39) -- as Ryan Patterson took him deep on July 3. He was charged with three runs on three hits and two walks over 1 2/3 innings. Sea Dogs starter Michael Bowden was reached for three runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts over 4 1/3 frames.

Andrew Pinckney hit a two-run homer, Dusty Brown went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and Jed Lowrie chipped in an RBI for Portland (41-43).
