Reliever notches eight of Emeralds' 17 strikeouts against Canadians

Jeremy Hefner struck out eight in three innings as part of Eugene's 17-strikeout performance in a 5-1 victory over host Vancouver on Sunday.

Emeralds starter John Hussey struck out six in 3 2/3 innings. Hussey gave up a run in the first inning on a double by Daniel Hamblin, one of three Canadians hits. Robert Woodard (1-0) came on for Hussey and retired all four batters he faced, fanning two, to get the win.

Hefner entered the game in the sixth and struck out the side in the seventh and eighth. He allowed one hit and threw two wild pitches. Jackson Quezada had one strikeout as he retired the side in order in the ninth.

Hefner is second on the Emeralds (14-6) in strikeouts with 21 in just 12 1/3 innings. He's allowed one run on seven hits and walked three batters in his five outings this season. Hussey leads the team, having fanned 24 in 19 2/3 innings. He's 2-0 with a 2.29 ERA in five appearances, four of which have been starts.

Eugene took the lead with a three-run sixth. Two runs scored on wild pitches by Vancouver reliever John Quine, who had three in the inning. Andrew Parrino also singled in a run. Parrino, who went 2-for-5, doubled in a run and scored on a single by Luis Durango in the eighth.

Durango was 2-for-4, and Mitch Canham was 3-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base.

Pedro Figueroa was charged with two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings for Vancouver (12-8). He walked four and struck out three. Figueroa (1-1) pitched five scoreless innings before running into trouble in the sixth.
