Concepcion and Megrew Named Southern League Players of the Week

Catcher and pitcher are best of the circuit last week
July 11, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Suns catcher Alberto Concepcion and starting pitcher Mike Megrew were honored today by the Southern League of Professional Baseball as the league's Hitter and Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 2-8.

Concepcion, enjoying his first year in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, headed into the Southern League All-Star break on a high note, hitting for the cycle in a 12-7 victory at Carolina on July 7. He led off the second inning with a ground-rule double, hit an RBI single in the third and legged out his first triple in over two years in the fourth. With a three-run home run in the sixth inning, Concepcion became the second Southern Leaguer to hit for the cycle this season and the first member of the Suns to accomplish the feat since Carlos Villalobos in June of 1998. It was the second consecutive four-hit game for the 26-year-old Concepcion, who went 4-for-6 with three runs scored in a 16-6 victory against the Mudcats on July 6.

A resident of El Segundo, CA, Concepcion tied for the league lead with nine runs scored during the week despite playing in just four games. He also led the circuit with a .684 on-base percentage and a 1.250 slugging percentage. Concepcion spent his entire career in the Boston Red Sox organization before being signed by the Dodgers as a free agent before the 2007 season.

Megrew won twice and led the Southern League with 18 strikeouts during the week, helping the Suns enter the All-Star break tied for the circuit's best record (15-5). On July 2, Megrew allowed two runs and matched a season high with eight strikeouts in five innings of a 6-2 win against Mobile. He established a new season high with 10 strikeouts - his most since fanning 11 in seven hitless innings for Class-A Vero Beach on May 19, 2004 - in six innings of a 12-7 win five days later at Carolina.

The 23-year-old Megrew did not give up a hit in that game until Brad Davis connected for a two-out double in the fifth inning. A native of Hope Valley, RI, Megrew has won each of his three decisions since the beginning of June for the Suns, who have won 27 of their last 35 games.

Concepcion, Megrew and the rest of the Suns are back from the Southern League All-Star Break and will host the Birmingham Barons in a five-game series starting Wednesday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Tickets for all five games, including Thursday Night Throwdown, Simpson's Night and Fireworks on Friday, the Tug McGraw 1967 Bobblehead giveaway on Saturday and a Kids' Jersey Backpack Giveaway on Sunday, are available at the Suns box office, by calling (904) 358-2846 or online at www.jaxsuns.com.
