Former Major League Star Nate Colbert To Sign Autographs On Wednesday, July 18 At Cashman Field
He played 10 Major League seasons (1966-76) with Houston (1966-68), San Diego (1969-74), Detroit (1975), Montreal (1975-76) and Oakland (1976). He appeared in 1,004 career games and batted .243 with 173 home runs and 520 RBI. Colbert was the first star of the expansion San Diego Padres and was a three-time All-Star (1971-73). He established career highs with 38 home runs during the 1970 and 1972 seasons. He drove in a career-high 111 runs in 1972 and accounted for 22.7 percent of his team's runs, a major league record that still stands. On August 1, 1972, Colbert hit five home runs and drove in 13 runs in a doubleheader in Atlanta. The RBI total established a record that has since been tied by St. Louis' Mark Whiten (Sept. 7, 1993 at Cincinnati), and the five home runs tied Stan Musial's 1954 Major League mark. Colbert's 163 home runs is a San Diego team record.
Colbert was originally signed by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1964. He made his Major League debut 4with Houston in 1966 and was later selected by the Padres in the expansion draft in October, 1968.
