Davis' hitting streak snapped

Settles for share of Gates' California League record
July 19, 2007
The Stockton Ports ended Chris Davis' 35-game hitting streak but could not stop their own losing streak.

Davis went hitless for the first time since June 7, but Taylor Teagarden drove in three runs Wednesday as the Bakersfield Blaze handed the Ports their eighth straight loss, 6-3.

"If it had to end, I wanted it to end on a win," Davis said. "I had a lot of pitches to work with, but I just couldn't get it done."

Davis grounded out in the second inning and struck out in the fourth and sixth before walking in the eighth. Blaze hitting coach Brant Brown called that eighth-inning plate appearance "the ultimate team at-bat."

Bakersfield (12-15) tied the game later in that inning, giving Davis one more chance to break Brent Gates' 1992 California League record. But he fanned again in the ninth against reliever Patrick Currin (1-3), completing his 11th three-strikeout game of the season.

"I think I'll be a little more relaxed tomorrow," Davis said.

The 21-year-old third baseman batted .390 with 11 home runs and 50 RBIs during the streak.

"These streaks don't happen that often, especially for a player in his first full season," Bakersfield manager Carlos Subero observed. "We're all happy for him. You root for individual accomplishment, and his unselfish approach has brought this team together."

After hitting a solo homer in the second, Teagarden came through with a two-run single in the ninth. Matt Smith hit and RBI single in the seventh, then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the ninth as the Blaze (12-15) won their fourth straight.

Josh Giles (4-4) walked one in a hitless eighth to get the win and Jose Marte pitched around a hit in the ninth for his second save. Bakersfield starter J.B. Diaz gave up three runs on six hits over five innings with three strikeouts and a walk.

Raul Padron went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, his 10th, in the third and Darryl Lawhorn blasted his first of the season for the Ports (9-17).

Oakland designated hitter Mike Piazza, continuing a rehab assignment for a shoulder injury, went 1-for-3 with a sixth-inning single and a walk for Stockton.

Currin was charged with three runs on two hits and two walks, striking out one in the ninth. Ports starter Andrew Bailey allowed two runs on three hits over six innings with eight strikeouts and six walks.
