Braves retire Ruiz' number 16

Richmond to honor Chico Ruiz on Hispanic Heritage Day
July 20, 2007
The Richmond Braves will retire Chico Ruiz' number 16 as part on Hispanic Heritage Day presented by Hardee's on Sunday.

The Braves will honor Ruiz prior to their game against the Toledo Mud Hens at 2 p.m. The first 2,000 fans to enter the ballpark will receive a commemorative Chico Ruiz ball, courtesy of Hardee's.

Ruiz played his entire 14 season career in the Braves organization, and was with Richmond from 1973-74 and from 1976-1984. He is second in Braves history in games played and is the all-time leader in at bats. Ruiz is fourth in Braves history in hits, third in triples and fourth in doubles. He was a three-time winner of the John M. Zwack III Memorial Award for community service. He also played in 43 big league games with the Braves.

Ruiz' number 16 will be the first player number ever retired by the Braves. The Braves current retired numbers are 23 for former manager Tommy Aaron and 42 for Jackie Robinson.

In addition to honoring Ruiz, the day will feature tributes to the contributions of Latin American players. There will be an exhibit featuring memorabilia of Latin American players and teams, as well as a band performing Latin music on the concourse.

The Braves will also auction off autographed Chico Ruiz memorabilia at www.rbraves.com. For more information please call the Braves at 359-4444 or visit www.rbraves.com.
