June 5, 2018

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Tortugas committed a season-high six errors in a 9-3 loss to the Clearwater Threshers on Tuesday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in front of 2,282 fans. Hector Vargas led the way by committing four errors, as the Tortugas surrendered six unanswered runs and five unearned runs in total.

Clearwater got the scoring started in the top of the second against LHP Ty Boyles. With two-outs, Jose Gomez extended the inning with a bunt single and came in to score on a Luke Williams double off the wall in center.

Daytona immediately responded in the home half. it Ibandel Isabel led off the frame with a solo homer to the batters eye against RHP Connor Seabold. It was isabel's seventh home run in his last seven games, and a Florida State League-Leading 12th of the season.

However, the Threshers retook the lead in the top of the third. Adam Haseley reached base on a Vargas throwing error and scored on an Austin Listi two-run homer to left, moving ahead. 3-1.

The Tortugas cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, when Bruce Yari came up and hit a two-out solo home run to the video board off Seabold, his third of the year, to make it 3-2.

Daytona tied the game an inning later. Brantley Bell and Narciso Crook led the inning off with back-to-back singles, and advanced to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Vargas. TJ Friedl then drove in Bell with a groundout to second to tie the game at three.

Clearwater broke it open in the top of the sixth, when they sent nine to the plate and scored four unearned runs, thanks to three more Tortuga errors. Jose Pujols reached on Vargas' fourth error of the night, then moved to second on a Gomez single. Pujols would come around to score on an Arquimedes Gamboa single to put Clearwater up 4-3. Gamboa would wind up moving in to scoring position on a Siri throwing error on the play, another Daytona miscue. On the very next pitch, Haseley drove in Gomez and Gamboa with a two run single up the left field line to go up 6-3. Then, two batters later, Edgar Cabral got in on the action by hitting an RBI single to score Haseley from second, making it 7-3.

The Threshers scored two more in the top of the seventh. Raul Rivas led the inning off with an infield single and scored on a Pujols two-run homerun to the left field corner, capping the game's scoring.

Seabold (2-4) earned the win, working 5 ⅔ innings, allowing seven hits, three runs, and a walk, while striking out six. Boyles (2-4) took the loss, going 5 ⅓ innings and allowing five hits, five runs (two earned) and a walk, while striking out three.

Daytona will send RHP Tony Santillan (4-3, 2.81 ERA) to the mound on Wednesday against RHP Adonis Medina (5-2, 4.97 ERA).

First pitch Wednesday is scheduled for 7:05 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:50 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
