Modesto falls in series finale to San Jose, 8-0

April 8, 2012
MODESTO, CA -- (April 8th, 2012) -- San Jose starting pitcher Justin Schumer tossed six no-hit innings, and the Giants went on to shutout the Nuts 8-0 on Sunday afternoon at John Thurman Field. Modesto (1-3) dropped three of four over the weekend against San Jose (3-1) to open the 2012 season.

Schumer (1-0) allowed only two base runners to reach in six frames, one on a hit batsman, and the other on a throwing error by Giants third baseman Adam Duvall. The 2010 non-drafted free agent signee by San Francisco needed only 67 pitches to cruise through six innings in his Cal League debut for the win.

Modesto was able to break up the no-hitter on the first batter after Schumer exited the game, as Giants reliever Jose Valdez gave up a single to Dallas Tarleton to open the seventh inning.

San Jose continued to show a lot of offensive potential early in the season, pushing across their eight runs on nine hits, including three extra-base hits. Second-baseman Bobby Haney led the way with a 4-for-4 afternoon, with two doubles, an RBI, and two runs scored.

Nuts started Christian Bergman (0-1) took the loss, giving up five earned runs on four hits in four innings of work. He also issued three walks, with each eventually turning in to a run. The Giants pushed across single runs in the second and third against Bergman, before putting together their biggest inning in the fourth with three runs against the right-hander.

Modesto continues with the fifth game of a seven game homestand on Monday night, as they welcome the Visalia Rawhide for a three-game series. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with RHP Jose Gonzalez taking the hill for the Nuts, facing off against Visalia lefty Alex Carreras.
