Captains Fall 5-4 in 14 innings
(Midland, MI) - The Great Lakes Loons defeated the Lake County Captains by a score of 5-4 of Wednesday afternoon/evening at Dow Diamond in Midland, Michigan. The game lasted into the 14th inning and was won by Great Lakes in the bottom half. With one out, Prat Maynard singled to left field and then Kevin Taylor laced a single down the line that advanced Maynard to third. The throw from the outfield got away from the cutoff man Maynard scampered home to give the Loons the victory in the four hours and nine minute game.
The Loons scored first as Jesus Arrendondo singled and then Joe Winker hit into a fielder's choice but an error allowed Arrendondo to reach 2nd and Winker was safe at first. Scott Schebler doubled home Arredondo and Winker to third. Prat Maynard then grounded out to second base and got the RBI as Winker scored and Schebler advanced to third. Schebler came home on a single by Kevin Taylor and the Loons led 3-0 after one complete inning.
Great Lakes added on in the 2nd inning on a solo homerun by Jesse Bosnik. This is the second game in a row where Bosnik has taken Captains pitching deep. The score after two innings was Lake County 0 and Great Lakes 4.
Lake County answered in the top of the forth inning when Alex Lavisky hit a one out single that scored Luigi Rodriguez and LeVon Washington. The lead was cut in half and the score stood at 4-2 Loons. Lavisky was not done as in the fifth he picked up two more RBI's on a double and that tied the game at four. Lavisky is the second Captains player to have four RBI's in a game this series.
Captains starter Felix Sterling (0-1) didn't factor in the decision after going 5 innings and allowing just four hits, four runs one was earned. Sterling walked one and struck out six. Cole Cook entered the game and pitched a scoreless sixth inning and then Kyle Petter relieved Cook . Petter pitched three innings in relief all scoreless and five strikeouts. Mason Radeke entered when the game went to extra frames. Radeke pitched a scoreless 10th, 11th and 12th inning. Jordan Cooper (0-1) relieved Xavier De Los Santos who exited the ball game without retiring a batter in the 13th, and got out of it with no damage. Cooper came back out for the 14th inning.
The Loons starting pitcher Jarret Martin (0-0) also didn't factor in the decision. Martin was knocked out of the game after four and two thirds innings pitched allowing 4 runs three were earned. Martin surrendered five hits two walks and struck out six. Jose Dominguez entered the game and pitched three and one third scoreless innings in relief. Jason West preserved the tie as the game went to extra innings. West hurled two innings gave up one hit and struck out two. Ryan O'Sullivan also pitched three innings of scoreless ball and gave way to Matt Sheldon. Sheldon ended up the winner and improves to 1-0.
The Captains will open the home season on Thursday night April 12 at 6:30 PM at Classic Park. The Captains begin celebrating the start of their 10th season in northeast Ohio by welcoming the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Rays) to town.
