PawSox top Wings

April 12, 2012
Che-Hsuan Lin homered and doubled to help the Pawtucket Red Sox top the Red Wings 10-1 Thursday night at Frontier Field. The series and homestand concludes Friday night at 7:05 p.m..

The Red Sox were the first to strike in this match-up of right-handers Brandon Duckworth, and the Wings' Daryl Thompson. with Nate Spears advancing home on an RBI single from Lars Anderson. Pawtucket threatened to strike again in the first inning, when Anderson reached second off a wild pitch, however Thompson was able to fight his way through the inning with a couple of strikeouts.

Rochester's bats were cold early in the game going nine up, nine down against Duckworth.

The Sox were in position to score again in the third, with Iglesias stealing second and reaching third on a fly-out, but Thompson was able to pitch his way out of trouble to get the last out and keep the lead at 1-0.

In the fourth, Lin homered into left field off of a 1-2 pitch from Thompson to make it 2-0 PawSox. The Wings looked primed to score in the bottom of the inning with Tsuyoshi Nishioka stealing second, however centerfielder Che-Hsuan Lin robbed Matt Carson of a hit to end the inning.

Jeff Manship came to pitch in relief in the fifth, and was then able to gain control of the game with a quick top of the inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Rene Rivera homered off a 2-0 pitch from Duckworth to cut the lead in half. The Wings looked poised to score more and possibly take the lead with the bases loaded and two outs, however were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

Manship continued to maintain control of Pawtucket through the sixth, striking out two and then getting Alex Hassan to ground out with runners on second and third.

Andrew Miller, on rehab assignment from the Boston Red Sox, came into the game in relief for Duckworth in the bottom of the sixth.

Pawtucket picked up another run Manship in the seventh on Ryan Lavarnway's RBI hit with one out. That prompted a pitching move, with Tyler Robertson replacing Manship.

The Wings loaded the bases against Miller in the seventh, and Miller came out of the game with Will Inman taking over to face Joe Benson. Inman needed just three pitches to strike out Benson and end the Wings' shot at getting back into the game.

Pawtucket put the game away in the eighth inning when they scored seven runs, with Spears' two-run single off of Brendan Wise the key hit.

Anthony Slama pitched the ninth inning for Rochester.

Through 10 innings, the Rochester Red Wings and Maine Guides had battled to a scoreless tie. However, in extra innings, the Maine offense came to life, as slugger Karl Pagel smashed a solo HR to pace the Guides to a 2-1 victory in 12 innings. Wings starter Jamie Werly pitched 7 innings of shutout ball, allowing only 4 hits and striking out 5, but the offense failed to provide enough support. The Wings offense could only manage 4 hits, as base runners were hard to come by. Reliever Pat Underwood allowed Maine to push across the winning run in the top of the 12th, and Rochester went scoreless in the bottom of the 12th. The Wings were mired in the middle of a 4 game losing streak. ..April 12th, 1999 Starting pitcher Matt Snyder got roughed up for 6 runs over 4 innings, as the Red Wings fell to Scranton Wilkes-Barre 9-2. Snyder struggled with his control all game long, issuing 4 walks, as Scranton jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Wings got on the board. The Wings could manage only 5 hits all game long, and struggled with base runners, stranding 8 on the base paths. Ryan Minor drove in a run with a double, and Lyle Mouton also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, but in the end the Wings couldn’t come through with the clutch hits.

This Day in IL Baseball History:
2000 –
Deion Sanders, beginning his third stint in the Cincinnati Reds organization after being out of baseball in 1998 & 1999, scores the first run in the history of Louisville Slugger Field in the 1 st inning of the RiverBats’ home opener against Norfolk. Sanders draws a walk and comes around to score on a single by Chris Sexton. 13,242 fans turn out for the historic day in Louisville, which remains the largest crowd in the park’s history. The euphoria of Opening Day would soon wear out – Sanders appeared in just 25 games due to injury, and the RiverBats played mediocre baseball most of the season, finishing 71-73 and 10.0 games out of 1 st place. The club would bounce back nicely however in 2001, winning the Governors’ Cup Championship.
