Cabrera Flirts with History, Sweeps Hooks
TULSA, Okla. - Edwar Cabrera was three outs from perfection Tuesday night when Chris Wallace smashed a single past the mound. The infield hit derailed Cabrera's date with destiny but did little to deter Tulsa's 4-0 victory over Corpus Christi in the series finale at ONEOK Field.
The 24-year old southpaw set down the first 24 Hooks in order, striking out eight, before Corpus Christi's catcher came to the plate. Wallace turned on a first-pitch changeup from Cabrera, blistering a ground ball bound for center field. Drillers second baseman Angelys Nina moved far to his right and made a diving grab behind the bag. Nina popped up and delivered a strike to first base but Wallace beat the play.
Cabrera (2-1), who led the minors last season with 217 strikeouts, was then lifted in favor of Coty Woods after throwing 102 pitches.
Woods needed just eight pitches to end the game, marking the second time in franchise history that the Hooks were held to one hit. San Antonio accomplished the feat in a 5-0 triumph at Whataburger Field on April 7, 2006.
After averaging nearly 7.5 runs thru the first nine contests of the season, Corpus Christi (5-7) scored a total of two runs in the three-game series. The Hooks have now dropped four in a row.
Hooks starter Ross Seaton matched zeros with Cabrera for four innings until Lars Davis lifted a two-run homer to right field. Seaton again fell victim to the long ball in the sixth when Kiel Roling mashed a one-out solo shot to put Tulsa up by three.
Seaton (0-2) was charged with four runs, all earned, on six hits over seven innings. He walked two and fanned four, registering 67 of 96 for strikes.
Corpus Christi opens an eight-game homestand Thursday night against Frisco. The RoughRiders send Barret Loux (2-0) to the hill to face Jose Cisnero (1-0).
