Flashback: May in the South Atlantic League
May 3 -- The Lexington Legends cracked a season-high 18 hits in a 16-4 rout of the Lake County Captains. Jonathan Ash went 5-for-6 with a home run and five RBIs for the Legends.
May 8 -- Hagerstown and Asheville combined for 35 runs in the Suns' 19-16 victory. Hagerstown broke a 16-16 tie with three runs in the 12th inning. The clubs set a South Atlantic League record with 20 extra-base hits, while the 41 hits -- 23 for Hagerstown -- matched a league mark.
May 13 -- Lexington hosted the Asheville Tourists for Used Cars Giveaway Night. Three fans won a used car, but the Legends weren't so lucky as Asheville won, 7-6.
May 15 -- Greensboro's Jeff Allison, the Marlins' first-round pick in 2003, picked up his first win in two years as the Grasshoppers shut down the Suns, 3-1. The right-hander allowed one run on five hits and struck out six in six innings in his third start for Greensboro.
May 15 -- Hunter Pence homered for the third consecutive game, powering Lexington to a 6-5 win over Asheville. It capped a productive stretch for the Legends left fielder, who went 10-for-29 with five homers, eight RBIs and seven runs scored from May 9-15 to win Offensive Player of the Week honors.
May 16 -- Jack Egbert tossed his second consecutive complete game for Kannapolis. The right-hander also picked up the win on May 11 against Lakewood, tossing seven innings in a 3-1 victory. Egbert was given the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week award.
May 17 -- The Delmarva Shorebirds turned a triple play in the seventh inning during a 9-5 loss to Kannapolis. Layne Berry lined out to right fielder Quincy Ascencion. Kannapolis thought the ball hit the ground, and Ascencion threw out Adam Ricks at first. First baseman C.J. Smith relayed to third to snag Chris Kelly.
May 19 -- Greenville's Gary Galvez, Jesus Delgado and Kyle Jackson combined to no-hit the Savannah Sand Gnats, but the Bombers lost, 4-3. Savannah scored four runs in the third inning via five walks, two hit batters and a pair of wild pitches.

May 21 -- Derek Hankins tossed a seven-inning, one-hit gem in the Hickory Crawdads' 3-2 victory over Charleston. The right-hander retired the first 16 batters and did not allow a hit until Marcos Vechionacci's one-out single in the seventh.
May 21 -- Chris Gimenez slugged a grand slam in the eighth inning as Lake County defeated Lakewood, 11-7.
May 22 -- Hagerstown sponsored a home run hitting contest for fans following its game against Lexington. Before those festivities, the Suns blanked the Legends, 4-0.
May 23 -- Greenville's John Otness extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a fourth-inning single against Kannapolis. At one point during the streak, the outfielder collected 15 hits in 22 at-bats. He also reached base in 11 straight plate appearances. Otness was named Offensive Player of the Week by hitting .682.
May 26 -- Columbus' Ryan Russ fell a single short of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs in a 10-1 victory over the Hickory Crawdads. It was the second consecutive three-hit game for the Catfish center fielder, who batted .600 over six games to win Offensive Player of the Week honors.
May 26 -- Lake County extended its winning streak to six games with a 7-4, 15-inning triumph over West Virginia. The Captains broke a 4-4 tie in the 15th on Chris Gimenez's two-run double and Marshall Szabo's RBI single.
May 28 -- Columbus made it five straight wins with an 8-5 victory over Hickory. Blake DeWitt homered and drove in five runs for the Catfish, who also had a five-game winning streak from July 9-14.
May 29 -- Hickory's Kyle Bloom made his second consecutive strong start as the Crawdads edged Columbus, 4-3. Bloom allowed one run on four hits in six innings, six days after the southpaw tossed a two-hitter over six innings against Charleston on May 23. He was rewarded with the Pitcher of the Week award.
May 31 -- The RiverDogs hosted Bring Your Mother-in-Law Night at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park. Fans were given cotton balls to save their ears and there was a mother-in-law drop-off zone. Befitting of the promotion, the game was postponed due to rain.
