Jones called up by injury-plagued Twins

Necomer can add depth to outfield and first base
August 17, 2007
MINNEAPOLIS -- Outfielder Garrett Jones will join the Twins in time for their game against the Rangers tonight after being recalled from Triple-A Rochester.

Jones will take the spot on the 25-man roster that was vacated when the club traded Ramon Ortiz to the Rockies on Wednesday.

It was the only move the club made despite having a variety of injury concerns.

The Twins held off on placing shortstop Jason Bartlett (strained left hamstring) or outfielder Jason Kubel (strained right oblique) on the disabled list. Both players showed improvement on Thursday and the club will likely wait a few days to see if they are healing rather than losing them for two weeks to the DL.

Jones has hit .280 with 13 homers and 70 RBIs for the Red Wings this season. He will give the Twins another option in left field and at first base. He also could be used as a designated hitter.

In his two previous stints with the Twins this season, Jones was 4-for-25 (.160) with one double and one triple.

Waiver pick-up: The Twins claimed veteran infielder Chris Basak off waivers from the Yankees on Thursday and assigned him to Rochester.

Basak, 28, batted .253 in 84 games at Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre and also appeared in five games with the Yankees.

Rehab start: Left-hander Glen Perkins was sent on a rehab assignment to Double-A New Britain on Friday.

Perkins, who has been on the 15-day disabled list since May 22 with a muscle strain in his left shoulder, will start for the Rock Cats at Portland on Saturday.
