Flashback: June in the California League

October 2, 2005
With the 2005 season in the books, MiLB.com takes a month-by-month look back at the biggest stories of the year in each league.

June 2 -- The Inland Empire 66ers turned a triple play in the fourth inning of their 6-3 victory over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. With runners at first and second, Brandon Balkcom popped up a sacrifice bunt to first baseman Bryan LaHair, who caught the ball and threw to second baseman Michael Garciaparra covering first. Garciaparra tossed to shortstop Erick Monzon to complete the 66ers' first triple play since 1999.

June 4 -- The Quakes scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the JetHawks, 8-7, and end a nine-game losing streak.

June 4 -- The Visalia Oaks hit three homers in a seven-run third inning and ended a 10-game losing streak by outscoring the San Jose Giants, 11-10.

June 6 -- Lake Elsinore starter Javier Martinez was named Pitcher of the Week. The right-hander went 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in two starts, striking out seven in six shutout innings against Modesto.

June 6 -- High Desert infielder Adam Keim was named Offensive Player of the Week after going 15-for-33 with five home runs and 15 RBIs. He scored 10 runs and had at least one RBI in every game during the week.

June 7 -- Former first-round pick Stephen Drew made his professional debut, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks to help Lancaster to a 6-5 victory over the Bakersfield Blaze. He went on to take the Offensive Player of the Week award.

June 9 -- Bakersfield pitcher Thomas Diamond struck out 14 in seven scoreless innings as the Blaze handed the JetHawks their first shutout loss in more than a year, 5-0. The performance earned him Pitcher of the Week honors.

June 10 -- The California League named its All-Stars for the June 28 game against the Carolina League. The team included Bakersfield pitcher Thomas Diamond, Inland Empire outfielder Wladimir Balentien and Rancho Cucamonga shortstop Brandon Wood.

June 17 -- The JetHawks held Burt Rulan Bobblehead Night. Rulan launched his privately financed SpaceShipOne and exceeded an altitude of 328,000 feet twice within a 14-day period.

June 19 -- Bakersfield's Thomas Diamond tossed a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts to lead the Blaze past the Mavericks, 9-0. High Desert's only hit was a one-out single by Jared Price in the third inning.

June 20 -- Thomas Diamond of the Blaze was named Pitcher of the Week, becoming just the second Minor Leaguer to win the award in consecutive weeks this season. He was 2-0 with a 0.61 ERA in two starts, allowing six hits over 14 2/3 innings.

June 20 -- Visalia's Aneudi Cuevas was named Offensive Player of the Week after blasting four homers -- matching his career high for a season -- and driving in 13 runs. He started the week with three straight three-hit games and went 14-for-25.

June 20 -- Rancho Cucamonga's Jered Weaver pitched three innings and gave up one run in his professional debut. Weaver, selected 12th overall by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, threw 53 pitches in a 3-1 loss to Lake Elsinore.

June 24 -- Vincent Sinisi went 6-for-6 with three RBIs to lead the Blaze to a 19-7 victory over the Mavericks. Sinisi had a home run, a triple and four singles, falling a double short of the cycle.

June 27 -- Bakersfield's Vince Sinisi was named Offensive Player of the Week. Even better than his 6-for-6 night against High Desert was the fact that Sinisi was promoted to Double-A Frisco before the week ended. He was 11-for-21 with three homers and 11 RBIs.
