Toledo's Vasquez two-hits Indianapolis
Vasquez (11-5) fanned seven and walked one en route to his sixth career complete game.
"I was in a good rhythm right away," said Vasquez, who retired his first nine and 10 of the first 11. "[Catcher] Dane [Sardinha] and I were working quick, attacking the zone with fastballs and sliders and establishing low strikes. He saw these hitters [Monday] and we talked a lot between innings about how to attack them."
It was the second complete-game shutout of the season for the 25-year-old right hander, who tossed a five-hitter at Norfolk on July 17 and is 3-2 with a 2.16 ERA since then.
"I felt like I was in more control this time," Vasquez said of the difference between the two shutouts. "My arm felt strong from the start, and you never really know how long you can go. I felt like after the sixth inning I could go nine, especially with my pitch count down."
Vasquez threw 101 pitches in eight innings and was told by pitching coach Britt Burns he had 23 left before he would be removed. He escaped the ninth and a two-out walk on 22 pitches.
"I think I tried to overthrow a bit in the ninth," admitted Vasquez. "It was my first time pitching at home in the ninth, and the crowd was pretty excited. I may have even bounced a curveball or two." The victory tied Vasquez with five other hurlers for second place in the International League in wins.
Mike Hessman walked in the fourth to extend his home on-base streak to 37 games and Chris Shelton launched a grand slam over the left-field fence, his 13th homer of the year, for the Mud Hens (74-55).
Indianapolis starter Bryan Bullington (11-7) surrendered four runs on four hits and four walks while striking out five in five frames.
Andrew McCutchen had the only two base hits for the Indians (66-63).
