Reed Dominates in 2-0 Quakes' Win

April 22, 2012
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Chris Reed earned his first professional win and Tony Delmonico knocked in Chris Jacobs on two different occasions for the only runs of Sunday's action, as the Quakes shut out the Visalia Rawhide by a final score of 2-0.

The shut-out win for the Quakes is the first of the year and gives them three wins out of four games in the series.

Reed (1-2) had an exceptional day, allowing four base hits over seven shut-out innings. The lefty fanned a season-high eight and didn't allow a walk.

In the first inning, Reed gave up consecutive two-out hits to Chris Owings and Jon Griffin, but got Bobby Borchering on strikes to end the frame. Borchering's strikeout would be the first of 16 consecutive batters that Reed would sit down.

The Quakes got on the board in the second, taking a 1-0 lead over Visalia starter David Holmberg. Jacobs reached on a one-out single, then moved to third base on a Joe Becker single. Delmonico followed with a fly ball to center field, deep enough to score Jacobs for a 1-0 lead.

Jacobs and Delmonico got it done again in the sixth, as the Quakes went up 2-0. After Holmberg (1-3) issued a walk, Jacobs stole second base, just his second steal in his six-year professional career. Jacobs moved to third on Becker's ground ball to second base, then scored on Delmonico's two-out single.

The long bottom of the sixth may have taken a toll on Reed, who opened the seventh by giving up back-to-back hits to Owings and Griffin. After Griffin's double pushed Owings to third base, Reed struck out Borchering and Keon Broxton for the first two outs of the seventh. Reed needed some help preserving the shutout, as Garrett Weber followed with a hard ground ball up the middle. Second baseman Scott Wingo saved it with a diving stop though, then got to his feet and threw out Weber to end the threat.

Scott McGough worked a 1-2-3 eighth, which included a pair of great catches from outfielders Tyler Henson and Nick Akins, then gave the ball to Logan Bawcom, who worked a perfect ninth for his fourth save.

The Quakes (8-10) head to Lancaster on Monday, opening a four-game series and a seven-game road trip against the JetHawks. Garrett Gould (0-2) eyes his first win as a Quake, while Lancaster goes with Zack Grimmett (0-1) at 7:00pm.

On Tuesday, May 1st, the Quakes will return to The Epicenter, hosting Inland Empire and Lake Elsinore as part of a six-game home stand. Tickets are available at 909-481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at The Epicenter...Go Quakes!
