Former Spokane Indians Lead Texas Rangers Early Season Surge
Ian Kinsler ('03) has continued to excel from the lead off spot as the Rangers offensive catalyst, leading the team with 17 runs scored while also contributing four home runs, five doubles, and 11 RBIs. The talented second baseman signed a five-year extension in early April that will keep him in Texas through 2017.
2010 American League Rookie of the Year Neftali Feliz ('07) has made a seamless transition from the bullpen to starting rotation, allowing just 12 hits in his first three starts while posting a 2.70 ERA. The hard-throwing Feliz twirled a complete game in his last start against Detroit, holding the vaunted Tigers offense to just three runs on three hits.
Derek Holland ('07), who gained national attention after his performance in last year's World Series, is relishing his new role as the team's top left-handed starter, winning two of his first four starts and limiting opposing hitters to a paltry .214 average.
A frequent flyer in highlight reels for his outstanding defense, speedy centerfielder Craig Gentry ('06) has made the most of his opportunity for regular playing time, tying for the team lead in stolen bases and collecting seven hits in his first 25 at-bats for a .280 average.
Mitch Moreland ('07) has struggled to find his groove on offense in the early going but has shown a more disciplined approach at the plate and continues to provide Gold Glove caliber defense at first base. Moreland's mammoth home run on April 9th put the Rangers ahead for good in an 11-5 comeback win over the Mariners.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of all has been reliever Robbie Ross ('09) who made the club as a non-roster invitee following a strong spring training. The young southpaw appears to have no intentions of returning to the minors either, collecting three wins in five appearances while posting a 3.38 ERA.
Texas will continue its three game series against the New York Yankees tonight at 5:05 p.m. at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
