Wranglers' Hughes wins fifth straight

Dusty Hughes tossed six strong innings to win his fifth straight decision as visiting Wichita defeated Springfield, 9-5, on Wednesday.

Hughes (6-2) yielded an unearned run on two hits while striking out a season-high nine. The 25-year-old left hander improved to 5-0 with a 2.98 ERA in his last eight starts.

Valentino Arce delivered an RBI single and scored during a six-run second and slugged a two-run homer, his first in 23 Texas League games, in the sixth to give the Wranglers (30-35) an 8-0 lead. The 22-year-old shortstop did not homer in 48 games with Class A Advanced Wilmington.

Michael Gaffney chipped in an RBI single, Irving Falu drew a bases-loaded walk and Jeff Nettles capped the second with a two-run single to right. The 29-year-old Nettles, who spent the last four seasons in the indepedent Atlantic League and is the son of former Major League third baseman Graig Nettles, has 10 RBIs in his last 11 games.

Colby Rasmus singled in his final at-bat in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to 15 games for the Cardinals (34-30). Allen Craig belted a solo roundtripper, his first since being promoted from Class A Advanced Palm Beach, in the seventh and Cody Haerther clubbed a three-run homer, his fifth, in the eighth for Springfield (34-30), which had a four-game winning streak halted.

Cardinals starter Adam Daniels (4-7) was charged with six runs on four hits and two walks with a strikeout in 1 2/3 frames. He has lost four straight decisions since beating Wichita on July 21. --Shane Figueroa/MLB.com
