Redbirds shelter the storm

Four-run eighth inning is key

Memphis, TN- The Storm Chasers built an early lead, but the Redbirds tacked on four runs in the eighth to win 4-5 at AutoZone Park on Friday.

'Birds starter Brandon Dickson allowed two runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in six innings of work. Omaha's Vin Mazzaro also lasted six innings while allowing only one run with three strikeouts.

"We only got five hits tonight, but we made them count," Memphis manager Ron "Pop" Warner said. "We made some mental mistakes early, but Brandon Dickson and our bullpen were able to pull it out."

Omaha struck first in the second inning scoring on a throwing error by Memphis catcher Mitch Canham and would tack on two more runs in the fifth.

Redbirds' designated hitter Allen Craig tied the game connecting on a two-run single which made way for first baseman Matt Adams who hit a two-run home run giving Memphis the lead with four runs in the eighth inning.

"I was just waiting for something that I knew I could elevate," Adams said. "I got a fastball over the heart of the plate and connected on it."

Eduardo Sanchez came on in the ninth, and despite allowing a run to allow Omaha to pull within one, retired the side for his fourth save on the season.

The Redbirds will host the Storm Chasers in the third installment of the series on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. (CT) at AZP.
