Flashback: July in the Carolina League

With the 2005 season in the books, MiLB.com takes a month-by-month look back at the biggest stories of the year in each league.

July 4 -- Potomac's Kory Casto went 5-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs in the Nationals' 8-7 victory over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. It was the first career five-hit game for Casto, who fell a double short of hitting for the cycle. He was named Offensive Player of the Week after hitting .519 with three homers and seven RBIs in seven games.

July 4 -- Wilton Reynolds hit two homers and scored the go-ahead run in the 14th inning as the Salem Avalanche edged the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 13-12. The Blue Rocks hit a franchise-record five homers in rallying from an early 9-2 deficit.

July 5 -- James Johnson struck out a season-high 11 over seven innings in the Frederick Keys' 12-2 drubbing of the Lynchburg Hillcats. The right-hander allowed one run on five hits, while Branden Florence went 3-for-4 with a homer and five RBIs for the Keys.

July 8 -- Matthew Goodson and two relievers combined on a one-hitter as the Blue Rocks shut down the Indians, 7-0. Goodson allowed only a one-out single to Chris De La Cruz in the sixth. Travis Rios and Edgar Martinez followed with three perfect frames. Brant Ust hit two homers for Wilmington.

July 10 -- Adam Loewen and James Johnson of the Frederick Keys and Potomac's Frank Diaz played in the 2005 XM Satellite Radio All-Star Futures Game. Loewen picked up the save in the World Team's 4-0 victory over the U.S.

July 11 -- Frederick's Brian Finch picked up the Pitcher of the Week award with a pair of six-inning gems, including a three-hitter against Lynchburg on July 10. He allowed one run on eight hits and fanned 15 during the week.

July 14 -- The Keys won their seventh straight game, defeating Wilmington, 7-2. Frederick's Dustin Yount went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs.

July 15 -- Myrtle Beach's Sean White was promoted to Double-A Mississippi after going 9-3 with a 3.71 ERA. The right-hander went 2-5 with a 4.11 ERA in eight Southern League starts.

July 15 -- Michael O'Connor hurled a complete game as Potomac trounced Lynchburg, 12-1. He scattered nine hits and got help from Chad Chop, who homered and drove in six runs.

July 18 -- It took Frederick's Dustin Yount just four games to garner the Offensive Player of the Week award. The son of Hall of Famer Robin Yount went 9-for-14 with two homers and seven RBIs.

July 18 -- Frederick's Adam Loewen was named Pitcher of the Week, five days after tossing seven scoreless innings against Wilmington. He is considered the Orioles' top left-handed pitching prospect.

July 21 -- Kory Casto homered for the fourth consecutive game as the Potomac Nationals edged the Salem Avalanche, 6-5, in 14 innings. Casto slugged a two-run homer in the fifth inning. The Nationals won it on Chad Chop's walk-off single in the 14th.

July 22 -- Brandon Chaves had four hits, including a walk-off single in the 10th inning, as the Hillcats won an 11-10 slugfest over the Blue Rocks. Bobby Kingsbury sent the game into extra innings with a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth.

July 25 -- Potomac's Kory Casto was named Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks after hitting six homers and driving in 11 runs in seven games.

July 26 -- Kinston's Tom Mastny won two games, allowing one earned run over 10 1/3 innings, to win the Pitcher of the Week award.

July 26 -- Kinston's Stephen Head went 6-for-7 with two homers and nine RBIs as the Indians pummeled the Keys, 25-4. He was promoted to the Carolina League two weeks earlier after hitting .432 with six homers in 10 games in the New York-Penn League.

July 26 -- Noah Hall cranked two homers and drove in four runs as the Winston-Salem Warthogs routed the Hillcats, 18-8. He went 3-for-5 with four runs scored.

July 28 -- Three pitchers combined on a one-hitter in the Blue Rocks' 6-0 victory over Kinston. Wilmington starter Thomas Hottovy retired all nine batters he faced and Felix Romero allowed only a single in four frames. Ryan Schroyer followed with two hitless innings.
