Santiago Dominates in 6-0 Shutout

April 29, 2012
Lake Elsinore, CA - Andres Santiago threw a gem on Sunday afternoon, helping the Quakes to salvage the final game of their three-game series in Lake Elsinore, a 6-0 win over the Storm.

Storm second baseman Corey Spangenberg was the only player who had an answer to Santiago all day, as he collected the only two hits allowed by Santiago all day. Santiago gave up a one-out single in the first inning, then proceeded to retire 17 consecutive batters. Spangenberg led off the seventh with a single, but was left stranded after Santiago took care of the next two hitters, then handed the ball off to Quakes' reliever Scott McGough, who disposed of Eddy Rodriguez to end any potential threat.

Santiago (2-1) struck out a career-high 11 batters, without issuing a single walk in picking up his second win of the year.

The Quakes played one of their best all-around games on Sunday, collecting a season-high 14 hits. They got going in the third, against Padres' rehabbing pitcher Tim Stauffer, as Scott Wingo's double off the wall brought home Nick Akins for a 1-0 lead.

They added another in the fourth, as Tony Delmonico's RBI double chased home Chris Jacobs for a 2-0 lead. Stauffer (0-1) would exit after the Delmonico hit, as he allowed a total of two runs on six hits over 3 2/3 innings.

Austin Gallagher helped to pad the lead in the fifth, as his two-out single up the middle knocked in Mike Pericht and C.J. Retherford, making it 4-0 against Storm reliever Dennis O'Grady.

Rancho capped the scoring in the ninth, as Retherford, Gallagher and Tyler Henson all cracked consecutive two-out doubles off of Matt Branham, making it 6-0.

McGough left after the eighth, in favor of closer Logan Bawcom, who struck out the side in the ninth in a non-save situation, preserving Rancho's second shutout of the year.

The Quakes (10-15) take Monday off, then open a six-game home stand on Tuesday, May 1st, as they host Inland Empire in the opening game of a three-game set. Angel Sanchez (1-2) will face 66ers' righthander Lay Batista (0-2) at 7:05pm. Tuesday is another Healthy RC Recycle Tuesday, as fans are encouraged to bring ten CRV-eligible bottles and cans to The Epicenter to claim a free Club Seat.
