Flashback: August in New York-Penn League

Aug. 3 -- The New Jersey Cardinals collected 25 hits en route to a 16-4 drubbing of the Tri-City ValleyCats. The 25 hits allowed were the most ever in Tri-City team history.
Aug. 4 -- Garrett Groce's three-run homer capped a six-run eighth inning as the Hudson Valley Renegades defeated Tri-City, 12-9. The dinger was Groce's third hit of the contest.
Aug. 8 -- Zack Zuercher of the New Jersey Cardinals was named the league's Pitcher of the Week on the strength of a pair of dominating victories. The ninth-round pick shut out Tri-City through seven innings on Aug. 1 before holding the Jamestown Jammers to two runs over 5 2/3 frames Aug. 6.
Aug. 9 -- Jose Fragaso fired off 6 1/3 innings of four-hit ball as the Oneonta Tigers edged Jamestown, 1-0. Fragaso outdueled Christopher Volstad, who allowed just an unearned run over five frames.
Aug. 12 -- David Seccombe tossed five shutout innings in the Staten Island Yankees' 7-1 win over Oneonta. The win moved Seccombe to 7-1 on the year while lowering his ERA to 1.56.
Aug. 13 -- Kevin Dixon turned in his second consecutive outing of five scoreless innings, leading the Mahoning Valley Scrappers to a 7-2 win over Jamestown. The 21-year-old allowed just three singles while fanning five.
Aug. 13 -- Oneonta's Luis Soto set career highs with two homers and five RBIs, leading the Tigers past the Lowell Spinners, 12-7. Soto's pair of dingers gave him six on the year.
Aug. 14 -- Joey Metropoulos' sacrifice fly in the eighth inning plated Cory Patton with the game's winning run as Auburn rallied to win its eighth straight, 5-4, over the Batavia Muckdogs.
Aug. 14 -- Chad Longworth went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Scrappers to their sixth straight victory, 5-3, over Jamestown.
Aug. 15 -- Aberdeen's Garrett Olson yielded just one hit over six shutout innings in a 2-1 IronBirds loss against Staten Island. Olson's strong performance in the losing cause would be his last for Aberdeen, as he was promoted to the Class A Advanced Frederick Keys later in the week.

Aug. 16 -- Rosters were announced for the first All-Star Game in the New York Penn League's 66-year history. Jamestown, New Jersey and Vermont led the pack with five representatives apiece.
Aug. 18 -- Jeremy Slayden scored a career-high five runs as Batavia trounced Mahoning Valley, 18-4. Slayden homered, doubled, walked twice and was hit by a pitch, scoring each time he reached base. Michael Costanzo also starred for the Muckdogs, going 4-for-5 with a homer and six RBIs.
Aug. 19 -- New Jersey's Sean Danielson broke a seven-year-old Cardinals record with six stolen bases in a 5-1 victory over Aberdeen. Danielson singled in the first, third and eighth innings, stealing second and third on each occasion.Aug. 19 -- Staten Island defeated Hudson Valley, 3-1, for its ninth straight victory. The Yankees had also reeled off a nine-game winning streak in July. The next night, New Jersey got the better of Staten Island, 5-3.
Aug. 21 -- Clay Harris doubled and hit a grand slam as part of a 12-run eighth inning, leading Batavia to a decisive 19-6 victory over Mahoning Valley. The 12-run inning and 19-run total were the most by an opponent in Scrappers' history.
Aug. 23 -- Hudson Valley's Garrett Groce won the first league Home Run Derby, belting 11 balls out of KeySpan Park. Groce defeated Auburn's Ryan Patterson in the final round of the contest.
Aug. 23 -- Gaby Sanchez's two-run single highlighted a 5-4 National League victory in the New York-Penn League's inaugural All-Star Game in Brooklyn, N.Y. Sanchez was named the game's MVP, while Vermont's Wendell Yost earned the win by tossing a scoreless fifth.

Aug. 26 -- Robert Ray and Chris Martin combined on a no-hitter as Auburn blanked Batavia, 5-0. Martin worked the game's first five innings, while Martin tossed four frames in relief.
Aug. 27 -- Rehabbing Boston Red Sox reliever Keith Foulke gave up an unearned run on three hits over a 1 2/3-inning stint with Lowell. Foulke's appearance with the Spinners marked his return to the mound after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee July 7.
Aug. 30 -- Matt Joyce went 6-for-6 with a homer, four runs scored and two RBIs as Oneonta pounded Tri-City, 20-4. Joyce's big night gave him 17 hits over his last 25 at-bats.
