Derek Moye to sign with Dolphins
Moye entertained Spikes fans last summer at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park as a member of the "Spikes Squad" game day promotions team, then posted 40 receptions and 654 yards to lead the Nittany Lions in the Fall. The Rochester, PA native also led Penn State in receptions and yards in the 2010 season, and ended his collegiate career with 144 catches for 2,395 yards and 18 touchdowns. His career yardage total ranks third all-time in school history.
During his time as a Spikes promotions intern, Derek played many characters and roles designed to keep fans smiling and provide fun, family entertainment. His biggest starring role came when he played Mike "The Situation" during the Spikes "Salute to the Jersey Shore" last summer. His 6-foot-5 frame also led him to emerge as the best candidate to don the Chick-fil-A cow costume for a regular between-inning promotion during the 2011 season.
"We're very excited for Derek and will be eagerly watching as he attempts to make the Dolphins roster and begin a long career in the NFL," said Jason Dambach, Spikes General Manager. "All of us with the Spikes have tremendous respect for the time that Derek put in with the team last summer and the fact there was no intern-related task that was above him, including handing out programs, wearing mascot suits, and dressing up in every goofy way imaginable."
Moye now joins the likes of Allen Craig, Jason Motte, Daniel Moskos and other former Spikes who have used State College as a launching point to the highest levels of their respective sports, albeit as the first to jump from the club's front office team to professional football.
