Thompson, Revere efforts not enough

Baseball Month in Rochester presented by Hoselton ToyotaThe Red Wings lost to the Empire State Yankees 5-2 Tuesday night at Frontier Field. Ben Revere had three hits for Rochester, which has dropped seven games in a row; the series and Baseball Month in Rochester continue Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.

Yankees starter Adam Warren was knocked around in his last start April 25, allowing nine hits and five runs in five innings. He gave up a single to Revere to open the game Tuesday, but Warren got three quick outs. The Wings put runners on base again in both the second and third innings, but were unable to score.

Rochester's Daryl Thompson was in early trouble Tuesday, but also escaped despite a pair of first inning walks. Thompson retired the Yankees in order in the second, and also made easy work of the batters he faced in the third inning.

The Yankees didn't get their first base hit until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Jayson Nix singled. But Thompson got three quick outs to strand Nix at first.

The Wings got on the board in the fifth inning. Rene Rivera singled with one out, and scored on Revere's double. The Wings went on load the bases with two outs, but couldn't add to the lead.

Rivera led off with a single in the top of the seventh and Brian Dozier's walk put two men on base, but the Wings could not capitalize leaving both men stranded.

Casey Fien entered to game for the Wings after a Steve Pearce lead off double followed by a Jack Cust single. Thompson pitched very well in six innings of work, surrendering three hits and one earned run with three walks and four strikeouts.

The Yankees tied the game at one when Francisco Cervelli grounded out into a double play with no outs scoring Pearce, who reached third on Cust's single. Tyler Robertson replaced Fien in the bottom of the eight after Fien walked Doug Bernier. Fien finished the night with 1 1/3 innings pitched and one walk.

In the bottom of eighth the Yankees took the lead when an error by Joe Thurston allowed Bernier to score from second. Pearce followed with a three-run home run.

Robertson pitched 2/3 of an inning, and was charged with three earned runs.
