Cardinals Left Stranded, Fall 2-1 in 11

May 2, 2012
The Palm Beach Cardinals (12-14) left a season-high 14 runners on base, as they lost to the Fort Myers Miracle, 2-1 in 11 innings.

Starter Richard Castillo made another strong pitching performance, as he went six innings allowing one run, while striking out six.

The lone run came in the top of the third inning, as Castillo gave up doubles to Andy Leer and Dan Rohling in the frame. Rohling's double in the right center gap scored Leer to make it 1-0. Fort Myers Miracle starter Pat Dean was up to the task, as he out dueled Castillo, tossing seven strong innings, allowing one run on seven hits.

Dean trying to stretch out his outing, went out to toss the seven inning, but was greeted rudely by Ronny Gil's one out single. After Gil stole second base, Vance Albitz delivered a ground rule double to tie the game at 1-1.

Reliever Dean Kiekhefer was spot on in relief, as he worked three scoreless frames to set the Cardinals up for a ninth-inning walk-off. The Cardinals bats went to work in the bottom of the ninth, as they loaded the bases with one out, but Albitz and Alan Ahmady hit weak fly balls that did not allow for them to push the run across.

In the top of the 11th, the Miracle capitalized on the Cardinals offensive woes, as they delivered an RBI single to put them up 2-1. Oswaldo Arcia singled in Danny Ortiz to give the Miracle a late lead. The Cardinals tried to answer, as they got two runners on with one out, but Albitz and Ahmady could not deliver and the Cardinals dropped their first game in six days.

The Cardinals finished the day 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position, as the pitching staff did all they could, tossing 11 innings of two run ball for the loss.

The cardinals return to action tomorrow morning, as they finish off the three-game set with the Fort Myers Miracle at 10:35 a.m., in the first Education Day of the 2012 season. Chris Corrigan will take the ball for the Cards as he hopes to get the Beach Birds back to their winning ways.
