Daytona Beach, FLThe Daytona Cubs mixed power, speed and a strong outing from RHP Hayden Simpson to snap a four-game losing streak in a 6-5 victory over the Clearwater Threshers at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Thursday.

The Cubs trailed 3-1 heading into the fifth inning, but RF Rubi Silva, who started in the leadoff spot for the third-straight game, smacked a tailing opposite-field homerun to left to cut the lead to 3-2. The homerun was Silva's first of the season.

In the sixth, DH Nelson Perez also led off the frame with a homerun (4) to tie the game at 3-3. Perez' was crushed into the parking lot over the center field wall. With one away in the frame and nobody on-base, 1B Richard Jones and C Sergio Burruel hit back-to-back singles to put two runners on for SS Arismendy Alcantara. On a 1-0 pitch, Alcantara blasted a three-run homerun (3)over the batting cages past the left field fence to give the Cubs a 6-3 lead. The three-run shot was Alcantara's second at Jackie Robinson Ballpark this season.

Meanwhile, Simpson was cruising in relief of RHP Matt Loosen who went three innings and allowed the three Threshers runs on four hits. Simpson allowed only one hit over his four innings of work en route to his first victory for Daytona. Simpson did not walk a batter and struck out four (1-3).

RHP Tony Zych allowed two runs in the eighth inning as Clearwater cut the Cubs lead to 6-5, but locked down his third save of the season with a quick ninth inning. Zych struck out three with his fastball and extremely effective slider.

In the victory, both LF John Andreoli and Perez extended their respective consecutive on-base streaks. With a single in the second, Andreoli has successfully reached base in each game he has a plate appearance in this season (20). Perez has now reached base in 15-straight games. Andreoli went 1-3 with a walk and has a .450 on-base percentage this season. Perez moved into second place on the team with his two RBIs (15). Daytona stole three more bases on Thursday and now have 39 on the season. Szczur stole his league-leading 14th, Andreoli his seventh and Silva his first.

With the win, Daytona improves to 8-19 on the season. The Cubs will begin FSL South play on Friday when they welcome the Jupiter Hammerheads to town for a four-game series.
