Stewart, Smith among upper-level prospects earning time with big club

With the 2007 season in the books, MiLB.com is taking a look back at the year's highlights in each Major League organization.

April 10 -- Josh Sullivan tossed seven one-hit innings as the Asheville Tourists cruised to a 6-0 win over the previously undefeated Charleston RiverDogs. The 22-year-old right-hander struck out six and walked one in his second start of the season. Meanwhile, Greg Reynolds dazzled in his Double-A debut as the Tulsa Drillers dropped the Corpus Christi Hooks, 7-0. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2006 draft scattered two hits and fanned seven over seven frames.

April 14 -- The Modesto Nuts scored 10 times in the second inning and slugged six home runs in a 16-7 win over the Bakersfield Blaze. Christopher Nelson homered twice and Jeff Kindel, Lino Garcia, Travis Becktel and Kyle Blumenthal also went deep.

April 18 -- Daniel Mayora stole four bases in Asheville's 3-2 win over visiting Rome. The 22-year-old second baseman walked before stealing second and third in the second inning, then singled before swiping second and third again in the fourth.

April 25 -- Aneury Rodriguez took a no-hitter into the seventh inning as Asheville blanked Greenville, 8-0. The 19-year-old right-hander yielded a leadoff single to Lars Anderson, then recorded his sixth strikeout and induced a double play before the bullpen took over to start the eighth.

April 30 -- Asheville's Keith Weiser was named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week after allowing two runs and fanning 13 without a walk in 12 innings. The 23-year-old lefty picked up road wins over the Greenville Drive and Kannapolis Intimidators. Teammate Michael Paulk was named Offensive Player of the Week after hitting .541 (13-for-24) with two homers, five RBIs and 13 runs scored.

May 5 -- Brandon Hynick gave up his first earned run of the season in Modesto's 8-4 win over High Desert. The 22-year-old right-hander, who tied a California League record with 39 straight scoreless frames, yielded a run on three hits over eight innings as his ERA climbed to 0.23. Daniel Carte supported Hynick's effort by going 5-for-5 with three doubles. The 23-year-old designated hitter ripped an RBI single in the first inning and singled again in the second before doubling in his next three at-bats.

May 8 -- Alan Johnson hurled six scoreless innings in his Double-A debut as Tulsa defeated Luke Hochevar and Wichita, 7-3. The 23-year-old right-hander scattered three hits and a walk while striking out five.

May 17 -- In what would be his last Triple-A game of the year, Ryan Spilborghs walked and stole home in the third inning of Colorado Springs' 5-4 loss to Sacramento. The 27-year-old outfielder made his season debut with the Rockies three days later.

May 21 -- Modesto's Chaz Roe was given the California League Pitcher of the Week award, his first of two on the season. The 20-year-old right-hander allowed a run on three hits in a complete-game loss to San Jose, then gave up a run on two hits over seven innings in a 7-1 win over Inland Empire.

June 7 -- Ian Stewart homered twice and knocked in four runs as Colorado Springs outslugged visiting Tacoma, 23-11. Every starter hit safely, drove in a run and scored for the Sky Sox, who recorded season highs in runs, hits (25) and homers (seven).

June 16 -- Jayson Nix stole home in the seventh inning of Colorado Springs' 6-4 win over Fresno. The 25-year-old second baseman repeated the feat in a 6-5 win over Salt Lake on July 6.

June 18 -- Tulsa's Samuel Deduno was named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week after going 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA. The 23-year-old right-hander allowed a run on four hits with 11 strikeouts over eight innings, then gave up a run on five hits while fanning 10 in his second career seven-inning complete game.

June 19 -- For the first time in professional baseball history, the first two picks from the same draft -- Tulsa's Greg Reynolds and Wichita's Luke Hochevar -- started against each other. The matchup of 2006 draftees drew a crowd of 10,656 to Drillers Stadium.

July 2 -- Tulsa's Corey Wimberly was named Texas League Offensive Player of the Week, going 11-for-19 with three doubles, two homers and seven runs scored. The 23-year-old second baseman raised his average 38 points to .264.

July 3 -- Christopher Nelson and Justin Nelson drove in five runs apiece as Modesto rallied for a 16-12 victory over host Stockton. Christopher Nelson smacked two homers, including a three-run shot in the ninth inning, and Justin Nelson went 3-for-5 with a three-run blast in the eighth. Eric Young Jr. went 5-for-6 and scored five times from the leadoff spot.

July 9 -- Colorado Springs' Seth Smith was named Pacific Coast League Offensive Player of the Week after hitting .462 (12-for-26) with three homers, seven RBIs and five runs scored. Modesto's Eric Young Jr. earned the same honor in the California League, going 14-for-28 with 13 runs scored, eight stolen bases, six doubles and five RBIs.

July 9 -- Bruce Billings tossed five perfect innings to lead Tri-City over Boise, 4-1. Cory Riordan kept the perfecto intact through the seventh, but Ty Wright led off the eighth with an infield single.

July 16 -- Colorado Springs starter Bob Keppel fanned seven of the first eight batters, including six straight at one point, but the Sky Sox fell to the Sacramento River Cats, 3-2. The 25-year-old right-hander, who allowed one earned run over 7 1/3 frames, did not record a strikeout the rest of the way.

July 23 -- Tulsa first base coach Mike Coolbaugh died after getting hit by a line drive in the left temple during the top of the ninth inning against Arkansas. Following a joint decision by the organization and the Coolbaugh family, Tulsa played two days later and posted a season-high five homers in a 12-6 victory over Wichita.

July 26 -- Colorado Springs slugged seven home runs, including four in the second inning, as the Sky Sox dropped visiting Iowa, 12-8. Edwin Bellorin, Joe Gaetti, Seth Smith and Ian Stewart homered in the second.

July 26 -- Modesto swiped eight bases, including four by Christopher Nelson, in an 8-4 win over Stockton. The Nuts led the California League with 173 steals on the season.

July 30 -- Asheville's Anthony Jackson was named South Atlantic League Offensive Player of the Week after hitting .588 (10-for-17) with two homers and seven RBIs.

Aug. 1 -- Daniel Mayora singled and stole home in the fifth inning as Asheville edged Lakewood, 5-4, to win its 10th straight game. The streak was the Tourists' longest of the season and improved their second-half record to a South Atlantic League-best 26-13.

Aug. 6 -- Tulsa's Christian Colonel and Jordan Czarniecki were named Texas League Offensive Players of the Week. Colonel batted .407 (11-for-27) with four doubles and nine runs scored, while Czarniecki hit .550 (11-for-20) with a homer and six runs scored. Meanwhile, Asheville's Andy Graham was named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week after tossing 15 scoreless innings. The 22-year-old righty scattered five hits and struck out a career-high 11 in his first-ever complete game, then fanned six over six frames in his next outing.

Aug. 11 -- Ian Stewart was called up to the Major Leagues after hitting .304 with 15 homers, 65 RBIs and 11 stolen bases in the Pacific Coast League. The 22-year-old third baseman went 0-for-2 with a run scored in his big-league debut.

Aug. 17 -- Seth Smith went 5-for-6 with two homers and hit for the cycle as Colorado Springs pounded visiting Las Vegas, 13-3. Jolbert Cabrera also collected five hits and drove in four runs for the Sky Sox.

Aug. 20 -- Modesto's Chaz Roe was named California League Pitcher of the Week for the second time in 2007, going 2-0 with a 1.84 ERA in 14 2/3 innings.

Aug. 25 -- Xavier Cedeno and two relievers combined on a three-hitter as Modesto clinched a playoff spot with a 9-0 win over High Desert. The 20-year-old left-hander, who took a no-hitter into the fifth, scattered three hits and struck out 10 over six frames. David Patton followed with two perfect innings, and Rob Zimmermann hurled a hitless ninth to preserve the gem.

Aug. 27 -- Two days after being announced as the unanimous choice for California League Pitcher of the Year, Modesto's Brandon Hynick picked up his first Pitcher of the Week award. The 22-year-old right-hander won both his starts to keep the Nuts tied for the North Division lead.

Sept. 4 -- Tulsa's Aaron Rifkin was selected as Texas League Offensive Player of the Week after hitting .412 (14-for-34) with four doubles, nine RBIs and four runs scored, while Tri-City's Lars Davis earned the same honor in the Northwest League after batting .455 (10-for-22) with two homers, six RBIs and six runs scored. Later that day, Rifkin collected four hits and a season-high five RBIs in the Drillers' playoff-clinching 11-0 win over Wichita. Tulsa was eliminated from the Texas League playoffs days later after a three-game sweep by Springfield.

Sept. 7 -- Robinson Fabian and three relievers combined on a five-hitter as Tri-City took Game 1 of the Northwest League Finals with a 3-2 win over Salem-Keizer. The 21-year-old right-hander allowed two runs on four hits over 7 1/3 innings. The Dust Devils then lost three straight as Salem-Keizer took the NWL title.
