A championship season for Clearwater; a farewell for Ottawa

With the 2007 season in the books, MiLB.com is taking a look back at the year's highlights in each Major League organization.

April 17 -- Right-hander Landon Jacobsen took a no-hitter into the sixth inning as Reading defeated Harrisburg, 3-2. Jacobsen helped his own cause with an RBI single in the fifth. The 27-year-old's stellar outing improved his record to 3-0 and reduced his ERA to a microscopic 0.75. Jacobsen went 6-5 with a 4.61 ERA for Reading before earning a promotion to Triple-A Ottawa in late June.

April 17 -- Michael Spidale's two-run triple highlighted a three-run 20th inning as Clearwater outlasted Tampa, 4-1, in one of the longest games in Florida State League history. The game was knotted at 1-1 after five innings, but the teams went 14 frames without scoring. Tampa loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 20th, but Michael Zagurski struck out Francisco Cervelli and Mario Holmann to end the game.

April 18 -- Matt Maloney, who went 16-9 with a 2.03 ERA for Class A Lakewood in 2006, earned his first career Double-A win as Reading defeated Harrisburg, 6-1. The 6-foot-4 left-hander allowed one run on three hits over six innings, and put an exclamation point on his memorable afternoon by belting a third-inning homer off the scoreboard. Maloney went 9-7 with a 3.94 ERA in 21 starts for Reading before being traded to the Reds organization in the deal that brought Kyle Lohse to Philadelphia.

April 21 -- Shortstop Jesus Merchan homered twice and tied a career high with six RBIs as Reading defeated Akron, 13-7. The native of Venezuela native, who had hit just one home run in the previous three seasons, smacked a solo shot in the third inning and a three-run blast in the fifth. Merchan hit .330 over 81 games with Reading before being traded to the Mariners organization in August for reliever Julio Mateo.

May 7 -- Jason Donald of the Lakewood BlueClaws was named South Atlantic League Player of the Week after hitting .556 over a seven-game stretch. The 22-year-old shortstop batted .310 and reached base at a .409 clip in 51 games with Lakewood before being promoted to Class A Advanced Clearwater in early June.

May 21 -- Kyle Drabek, the Phillies' first-round draft pick in 2006, yielded just two hits over seven innings as Lakewood blanked Hagerstown, 8-0. The 19-year-old son of 1990 NL Cy Young Award winner Doug Drabek struck out five and walked four en route to his fourth victory in his first eight starts.

May 23 -- Rehabbing Philadelphia first baseman Ryan Howard homered and drove in four runs to lead Lakewood to a 7-4 win over Hagerstown. The reigning National League MVP's big game moved him into a tie with Randy Ruiz for first place on the franchise's all-time RBI list. Howard drove in 87 runs for Lakewood in 2002.

May 29 -- BlueClaws center fielder Quinton Berry was named South Atlantic League Player of the Week after hitting .448 with nine runs scored and six stolen bases. Berry's 55 steals were the most of any player in the entire Phillies organization in 2007.

June 6 -- Kyle Kendrick pitched a complete-game six-hitter to lead Reading to an 8-1 victory over Harrisburg. The 22-year-old right-hander improved to 3-0 against the Senators and 4-7 overall. Kendrick's excellent outing turned out to be his last in the Minor Leagues as he received a promotion to Philadelphia five days later.

June 11 -- Josh Outman was named Florida State League Pitcher of the Week. The southpaw struck out 14 in 13 2/3 scoreless innings while picking up a pair of victories. Outman went 10-4 with a 2.45 ERA for the Threshers before receiving a promotion to Reading in late July.

June 11 -- Top-rated prospect Carlos Carrasco hurled a three-hit shutout as Clearwater coasted to a 6-0 win over Fort Myers. The 20-year-old retired 26 straight batters before yielding two hits in the ninth inning en route to his third career complete game.

June 15 -- Clearwater outfielder Jeremy Slayden displayed his prodigious power at the Florida State League All-Star Game, winning the Home Run Derby. Slayden, who hit 14 home runs during the season, launched two dingers in the first round, eight in the second and outhomered Palm Beach's Mark Hamilton, 5-2, in the final round.

June 22 -- Antonio Bastardo struck out eight over eight shutout innings to lead Lakewood to a 2-0 win over Hagerstown. Bastardo joined the BlueClaws on June 10 out of extended Spring Training, going 9-0 with a 1.87 ERA over 15 starts before his promotion to Clearwater.

June 25 -- After being reassigned from Reading, Brian Burgamy hit .450 in his first six games with Clearwater to earn Florida State League Player of the Week honors. The 26-year-old went on to hit .262 with 10 home runs and 38 RBIs with the Threshers.

July 2 -- Williamsport's Drew Naylor was named the New York-Penn League's first Pitcher of the Week after compiling a 3-0 record and 0.41 ERA in his first three starts. Naylor finished 8-6 with a 3.28 ERA in 14 starts for the Crosscutters, fanning 97 in 93 1/3 innings.

July 2 -- Reading scored 13 runs in the fifth inning en route to a 21-4 thrashing of the New Britain Rock Cats. The Phillies' big inning, which followed a seven-run fourth, featured a pair of two-run doubles by catcher Jason Jaramillo. Reading scored its most runs since May 27, 1991.

July 9 -- After collecting 12 hits in 29 at-bats, Williamsport second baseman Tyler Mach was named New York-Penn League Player of the Week. The Oklahoma State product's hot stretch was highlighted by a five-RBI performance against Jamestown on July 2.

July 19 -- Andrew Carpenter tossed the first shutout of his professional career as Clearwater defeated Dunedin, 3-0. The 22-year-old, who struck out a career-high nine and walked two, improved to 4-1 in six starts after the FSL All-Star Break. Carpenter led the organization with 17 victories.

July 21 -- Kyle Drabek's promising season ended prematurely when it was announced that the first-round draft pick would undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery. Drabek finished his abbreviated campaign with a 5-1 record and 4.33 ERA in 11 games, including 10 starts, with Lakewood.

July 29 -- Joey Hammond collected his 1,000th Minor League hit in Reading's 6-2 victory over Trenton. The 29-year-old, playing his second season with the Phillies organization and 10th overall, reached the milestone with an RBI single in the seventh inning. Hammond went on to bat .297 over 117 games split between Reading and Triple-A Ottawa.

Aug. 3 -- J.A. Happ took a perfect game into the sixth inning as Ottawa blanked Syracuse, 5-0. The Illinois native, who made a spot start for Philadelphia on June 30, matched his season high with eight strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. He improved his record to 4-5.

Aug. 5 -- Joe Savery, the Phillies' first-round pick in the 2007 draft, made his professional debut in Williamsport's 3-1 victory over Batavia. The Rice University product started and allowed one hit in three scoreless innings. Savery went 2-3 with a 2.73 ERA in seven starts for the Crosscutters.

Aug. 15 -- John Ennis tossed seven no-hit innings, but it wasn't enough as Pawtucket scored two runs in the 11th inning to beat Ottawa, 3-1. The 27-year-old righty, who began the season with 30 relief appearances, was removed with the no-hitter intact, but Geoff Geary gave up a single to Bobby Scales in the eighth.

Aug. 20 -- After collecting eight hits, including two homers, in a four-game span, Michael Taylor of the Williamsport Crosscutters was named New York-Penn League Player of the Week. The 21-year-old's hot stretch highlighted a season in which he batted .227 in 233 at-bats.

Aug. 20 -- Gary Knotts was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week on the strength of his one-hit shutout against Erie on Aug. 16. The 30-year-old right-hander, who lost his no-hit bid in the seventh inning, faced only 29 batters in the game.

Aug. 25 -- The Eastern League named its postseason All-Star team, which featured three Reading Phillies: Catcher Jason Hill, outfielder Greg Jacobs and pitcher Matt Maloney, who was traded to the Reds organization in late July. Hill hit .302 in 116 games with Reading, while Jacobs batted .310 and led the league with a .539 slugging percentage.

Aug. 27 -- Reading's Carlos Carrasco was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week. The Venezuelan hurled a rain-shortened, six-inning no-hitter against Altoona on Aug. 21, and followed with seven strong innings against Akron five days later. Carrasco was inconsistent at the Double-A level. In 14 appearances, he compiled a 4.86 ERA over 70 1/3 innings.

Aug. 27 -- Six weeks after his three-hit shutout, Clearwater's Andrew Carpenter hurled a seven-inning perfect game against the Fort Myers Miracle. The former second-round draft pick struck out seven and earned his league-leading 16th victory. He improved to 9-2 after the All-Star break.

Aug. 30 -- Gary Knotts, making his second Triple-A start of the season, tossed a two-hit shutout to lead the Ottawa Lynx to the 1,000th victory in franchise history. The Lynx, who began as a Montreal Expos affiliate in 1993, played their final game just four days later. Next season, the Phillies' Triple-A affiliate will be the brand-new Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

Sept. 1 -- The Clearwater Threshers clinched the FSL West Division second-half title with an impressive doubleheader sweep of the Lakeland Flying Tigers. After Andrew Carpenter and Luis Villareal combined on a one-hitter in the opener, Antonio Bastardo made his FSL debut and struck out 12 in just five innings.

Sept. 7 -- Brian Burgamy delivered an RBI single and scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as Clearwater defeated Sarasota, 4-3, to advance to the FSL Finals. Three Threshers relievers combined to allow just one hit in 4 1/3 shutout innings.

Sept. 11 -- Brad Harman fell a triple short of the cycle as Clearwater ended a 13-year championship drought with a 5-2 win over Brevard County. Jake Blalock collected three hits, while Brian Burgamy smashed a solo homer in the fourth inning. Andrew Carpenter notched the victory for the Threshers.
