Defenders surface in Connecticut

Norwich Navigators change name, logo, uniforms
October 17, 2005
The Norwich Navigators have resurfaced as the Connecticut Defenders.

The San Francisco Giants' Double-A affiliate in the Eastern League changed its name on Monday, unveiling a new logo, team colors and uniforms at a news conference in Mashantucket, Conn.

Defenders was the winning entry in a "Name the Team" contest. It was submitted by Robert Schaub of East Haddam, Conn., who received a package of gifts that includes 2006 season tickets at Dodd Stadium.

In June, the stadium hosted a "Save Our Sub Base" rally after a federal panel recommended the closing of the Naval Submarine Base New London. In August, the U.S. Department of Defense announced the base would remain open.

The area also is home to the USS Nautilus, the world's first nuclear-powered submarine, and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy is located in New London. In July 2004, U.S. Senators Christopher Dodd and Joseph Lieberman joined Connecticut Gov. Jodi Rell and U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons at Dodd Stadium to welcome back Connecticut National Guard troops from Operation Iraqi Freedom.

"The Defender name and logo reflects the core of what Southeastern Connecticut represents -- the Sub Base," said Defenders vice president Keith Hallal. "The name Defenders also honors the rich history and the present day contributions of the Connecticut citizens, residents and industry in the defense of our country."

The Defenders' black, silver and blue logo features a submarine cutting through the waves.

"I think the logo is one of the most powerful in all of Minor League Baseball and conveys the immense pride citizens of Connecticut have for the state-based defense industry, especially recently," said president and managing partner Lou DiBella.

"The process of changing the name was not something we did lightly. It was through personal conversations with countless fans, civic leaders and advertisers. The result is inspiring."

The Defenders open the 2006 season at home on April 6 against the Portland Sea Dogs.
