Shift to Cal League produces record-setting power numbers

With the 2007 season in the books, MiLB.com is taking a look back at the year's highlights in each Major League organization.

April 5 -- Jon Lester, making his first start since being diagnosed with anaplastic large cell lymphoma, yielded two hits and two walks and fanned five over four scoreless innings for Greenville. The 23-year-old left-hander reached 96 mph on the radar gun but did not figure in the Drive's 1-0 loss to Charleston.

April 16 -- In his first four games, Lancaster's Bubba Bell collected five homers and 15 RBIs. The 24-year-old center fielder had a two-homer, six-RBI performance in an 11-9 loss to Bakersfield, went deep twice and drove in four runs in a 19-5 rout of Bakersfield in which Lancaster recorded a season-high 21-hits and homered and added five RBIs in the JetHawks' 12-7 win over the Blaze. The gaudy numbers earned Bell California League Player of the Week honors.

April 18 -- Scott White homered, plated five runs to power Lancaster to a 6-5 win over Visalia.

April 20 -- Portland's Jacoby Ellsbury went 4-for-5 with two triples, three RBIs and two runs scored to bring his average up to .500 through eight games in the Sea Dogs' 5-2 triumph over New Hampshire.

April 28 -- Cory Keylor hit a three-run homer in the third inning on the way to a career-high five RBIs as Portland doubled up New Hampshire, 10-5. Jacoby Ellsbury doubled to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. The streak reached 15 games before the center fielder was promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket.

May 1 -- Clay Buchholz retired the first 18 batters before Bowie's Paco Figueroa singled to break up the perfect game. The right-hander allowed one hit over eight innings while fanning nine before the Sea Dogs prevailed, 4-1.

May 7 -- Aaron Bates' strong performance at the plate -- he bated .357 with three homers, nine RBIs and seven runs scored -- earned him California League Player of the Week honors.

May 8 -- Portland's Eric Crozier launched a grand slam as part of a five-RBI game to power the Sea Dogs to an 11-7 win over Trenton in the first game of a doubleheader.

May 11 -- Portland's Clay Buchholz struck out eight straight batters to break Josh Beckett's club record. The streak began in the second inning and continued until Nic Jackson homered in the fifth for Binghamton, which posted an 8-4 win.

May 12 -- Michael Bowden allowed one hit over a career-high seven innings with five strikeouts and a walk in Lancaster's 1-0 blanking of San Jose. Kevin Guyette followed with two perfect frames.

May 13 -- Lars Anderson blasted a three-run homer as Greenville snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over Augusta.

May 15 -- Kevin Cash stroked a grand slam as part of a six-RBI game against his former team and Jeff Bailey went 5-for-5 with three runs scored in Pawtucket's 15-6 trouncing of Durham.

May 17 -- Bubba Bell's California League-leading 13th homer, a two-run blast in the 11th inning, gave Lancaster an 8-7 win over Bakersfield. It was Bell's his third straight game with a rountripper.

May 19 -- Four pitchers, including Jon Lester, combined on a one-hitter as Pawtucket whitewashed Ottawa, 4-0. Lester left his sixth rehab start -- third with the PawSox -- in the fourth inning after experiencing a cramp in his left forearm.

May 19 -- Aaron Bates set a California League record by homering four times in Lancaster's 14-12 win over Lake Elsinore. The 23-year-old first baseman went 5-for-5 with six RBIs. After launching two solo shots, he blasted a pair of two-run homers. Tony Granadillo and Scott White also went deep for the JetHawks.

May 23 -- Tony Granadillo hit a three-run homer and a two-run triple and Bubba Bell scored four times as Lancaster rolled past Inland Empire, 19-7. The next day, Ryan Khoury went deep twice and collected a career-high five RBIs in a 16-8 win over the 66ers.

May 28 -- Portland became the first team to sweep a four-game series from Reading with a 4-1 win as Clay Buchholz fanned eight over 5 2/3 shutout frames. The victory was the Sea Dogs' 500th at Hadlock Field over 13 seasons as an Eastern League franchise.

May 29 -- Bubba Bell's 15 hits and eight RBIs helped Lancaster gain sole possession of first place in the Cal League Southern Division and secured his second Player of the Week award.

May 31 -- Chih-Hsien Chiang plated five runs and fell a double short of the cycle, steering Greenville to a 10-7 win over Hickory. The 19-year-old designated hitter delivered an RBI triple, a three-run homer and a run-scoring single.

June 7 -- Zachary Daeges scored five runs while going 4-for-5 in Lancaster's 16-4 win over Rancho Cucamonga. Daeges doubled twice, tripled and homered but could not hit a single to complete the cycle. Teammate Salvador Paniagua blasted a grand slam and finished with five RBIs.

June 11 -- Daniel Bard and Ryan Phillips combined on a rain-shortened six-inning no-hitter as Greenville blanked Kannapolis, 5-0. Bard walked six and fanned four over five frames.

June 14 -- Clay Buchholz struck out a career-high 12 over 5 2/3 frames before three relievers brought the total to a Sea Dogs' team-record 19 strikeouts. A night after fanning 14 times, Portland prevailed over Erie, 7-4.

June 14 -- Jonathan Still, Josh Reddick and Reid Engel became a record-setting threesome in Greenville's 11-5 win over Columbus. The trio belted two homers apiece, the first time in franchise history that multiple players went deep multiple times. The six homers were a season high for the Drive.

June 16 -- George Kottaras blasted a solo homer in the ninth inning to give Pawtucket a 4-3 walk-off win over Richmond. It was the second walk-off blast in five days for the 24-year-old catcher, whose three-run homer beat Ottawa.

June 23 -- Devern Hansack retired 21 straight Louisville hitters before yielding a run on three hits with seven strikeouts over eight innings in Pawtucket's 4-1 triumph over the Bats. The 29-year-old right-hander went on to earn International League Pitcher of the Week honors. Red Sox prospect Charlie Zink won the same award in the Eastern League after going 2-0 with a complete game and a 1.80 ERA.

June 23 -- Brad Correll tied teammate Aaron Bates' Cal League record by mashing four homers in Lancaster's 16-4 romp over High Desert. The 26-year-old outfielder totaled eight RBIs with roundtrippers in the first, third, sixth and eighth innings. He earned Player of the Week honors.

June 25 -- A pair of three-run blasts by Bubba Bell powered Lancaster to a 9-7 win over Bakersfield and pushed the 24-year-old center fielder to the 20-homer plateau.

June 27 -- Portland's only hit of the game, a two-run homer by Jay Johnson, gave the Sea Dogs a 4-2 win over Connecticut in the first game of a doubleheader.

June 30 -- Brad Correll homered and drove in six runs to power Lancaster to its eighth straight win, a 17-4 throttling of High Desert.

July 2 -- Clay Buchholz yielded one run and struck out 15 over 11 1/3 innings en route to winning Eastern League Pitcher of the Week honors for Portland.

July 4 -- The JetHawks clinched the first-halfCalifornia League South Division title with a 12-4 romp over Inland Empire. Mark Wagner homered twice and amassed five RBIs for Lancaster.

July 8 -- Jed Lowrie hit two of Portland's five homers in a 16-6 rout of New Hampshire. He went deep from each side of the plate and drove in four runs.

July 9 -- In his Double-A debut, Justin Masterson was unhittable for 6 2/3 frames as Portland blanked New Hampshire, 5-0. Hunter Jones followed with two perfect innings, and the Sea Dogs were one out from their first no-hitter since 2001 when Lyle Overbay singled to center field. The strong outing put Masterson in line for the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week honors.

July 9 -- Michael Rozier was named California League Pitcher of the Week after going 2-0 and allowing two earned runs over 12 2/3 innings in two starts.

July 16 -- Clay Buchholz allowed two earned runs on five hits over three innings in his Triple-A debut as Pawtucket defeated Ottawa, 6-4. He struck out four and walked three in his shortest outing of the season.

July 16 -- Jon Still of Class A Greenville and Ryan Kalish of short-season Lowell turned in strong offensive showings as Red Sox prospects took home a pair of Player of the Week awards.

July 17 -- Jeff Natale clubbed a franchise -record five singles and scored twice, while Bubba Bell blasted a three-run homer and an RBI single as Portland trounced New Hampshire, 13-1.

July 20 -- Dan Milano ended a scoreless tie in the 10th inning with his first homer, a two-run walk-off shot that powered Lowell past Williamsport.

July 21 -- Miguel Socolovich struck out four in five hitless innings as Lowell shut down Williamsport, 4-1.

July 22 -- Chad Spann hit a first-inning grand slam, his first homer of the season, on his way to a career-high five RBIs as the Sea Dogs rolled to a 9-5 win over Binghamton.

July 23 -- Josh Reddick homered twice and tie d a team record with six RBIs as Greenville coasted past Savannah, 8-2.

July 24 -- Mark Wagner highlighted an 18-hit effort by going 4-for-5 with a homer and six RBIs in Lancaster's 15-8 romp over High Desert.

July 25 -- Justin Masterson fanned 10 on the way to his fourth win in as many Double-A starts as Portland knocked off New Hampshire, 5-3.

July 26 -- Curt Schilling looked solid in a rehab start for Pawtucket. The 40-year-old right-hander fired five shutout frames, allowing two hits and fanning eight. The Red Sox could not hold on, however, dropping a 3-2, 10-inning decision to Toledo.

Aug. 3 -- A pair of blasts by Steve Garrabrants helped Lancaster eclipse its regular-season home run record. Garrabrants' solo shot in the eighth was the JetHawks' 175th roundtripper and helped them edge Rancho Cucamonga, 9-8.

Aug. 4 -- Cory Keylor went for a ride as he became the second player in Sea Dogs' history tohit for the cycle. Chad Spann broke the career high he set two weeks earlier with seven RBIs, powering Portland past Harrisburg, 18-7.

Aug. 6 -- Lancaster's Travis Beazley tossed 14 scoreless innings and struck out 11 in winning both of his starts en route to Cal League Pitcher of the Week honors. Paul Smyth was named Offensive Player of the Week in the South Atlantic League after hitting .476 with three homers and seven RBIs.

Aug. 9 -- Continuing his assault on Cal League pitching, Brad Correll went 5-for-5 with a homer, four RBIs and three runs scored as Lancaster defeated Modesto, 11-7. The perfect showing at the plate earned Correll Player of the Week honors.

Aug. 11 -- Zak Farkes became the third JetHawk to go deep three times in a game as Lancaster clobbered High Desert, 15-3. The 24-year-old designated hitter collected six RBIs, while teammate Jon Still homered and drove in five runs.

Aug. 20 -- Lancaster's Mark Wagner raked the California League for two homers and 10 RBIs while batting .450 clip to take home the Player of the Week award.

Aug. 25 -- Bubba Bell was named Cal League MVP and Rookie of the Year, joining Lancaster teammates Zach Daeges and Aaron Bates on the postseason All-Star squad. In three months and 76 games with the JetHawks, Bell batted .370 with 22 homers and 83 RBIs.

Aug. 26 -- Jon Still's second-inning homer was Lancaster's 204th of the season, breaking the Cal League record. Lars Anderson, Christian Lara and Zach Daeges also went deep in the JetHawks' 20-5 pummeling of Stockton.

Aug. 28 -- A broken-bat single came between Felix Diaz and a perfect game. The 26-year-old right-hander settled for a one-hitter and his first career complete game and shutout as Portland blanked Trenton, 9-0, in the second game of a doubleheader.

Aug. 30 -- Dustin Richardson tossed five hitless innings and Zach Daeges plated four runs in Lancaster's 13-1 rout of San Jose as the JetHawks clinched the second-half Cal League South Division title.

Aug. 30 -- Yamaico Navarro churned out five hits and drove in four runs for Lowell, which crushed Tri-City, 13-0.

Aug. 31 -- After hitting in 25 straight games, Jacoby Ellsbury goes 0-for-4 as Pawtucket drops a 9-3 decision to Scranton-Wilkes/Barre.

Sept. 4 -- Lowell's Jordan Craft yielded an unearned run and fans eight over 11 innings in two starts on his way to a 2-0 week and New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week honors. Lancaster's Steve Garrabrants batted .464 with two homers and 10 RBIs to take home the Cal League Player of the Week award.
