Sacs Full: WV beats Lexington 3-2
Lexington held a 2-0 lead after one inning against Power starter Nick Kingham. With two outs, Kingham hit Zach Johnson with a pitch and Matt Duffy drove a 2-0 delivery over the left field wall for his fifth home run and the early edge.
In the home half of the first, the Power halved the deficit as Alen Hanson reached on a double, moved to third on a single, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jose Osuna.
The scored remained 2-1 until the seventh due to strong pitching by both teams. Kingham pitched five total innings and struck out six, a new season-high, but would not factor in the decision. Lexington starter Mike Foltynewicz pitched five innings as well, allowing just the one run in the first.
Hanson reached on an error to start the bottom of the seventh and moved to third on Kirk Singer's second single of the game. Dan Gamache hit a shallow fly to left and Hanson tagged to score the tying run. With Osuna at the plate, Singer advanced to second on a balk by Nathan Pettus and took third on a wild pitch. Osuna then lofted a ball to center that allowed Singer to score the eventual winning run on another sacrifice fly.
Porfirio Lopez (1-1) pitched three scoreless innings for the win, striking out four Legends in the process. Pettus was charged with the loss for Lexington (0-3), which fell in its second straight game. Emmanuel De Leon pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save.
The Power collected 10 hits and won for the second straight day after having lost seven in a row from May 4 through 12. Hanson, Singer, and Willy Garcia had two hits each to key the offensive attack.
West Virginia continues this three-game set against Lexington on Tuesday night at 7:05 pm. Matt Benedict will get the call for the Power in game two against the Legends Luis Cruz.
