WEEK IN REVIEW: The Algodoneros split six games and are fifth in the league with an 8-9 record.
WHO'S HOT: Guasave leads the league in batting average (.323), runs scored (98), walks (68) and hits (198), while striking out a league-low 89 times. ... Jose Rodriguez has hit in 14 straight games. He has eight multi-hit games and four three-hit efforts during that stretch, and leads the league with 27 hits. ... Cristhian Presichi and Rodriguez both have 14-game hitting streaks.
WHO'S NOT: Spike Lundberg (Dodgers) has a 5.21 ERA after giving up a league-high four homers and 11 earned runs. ... Former Yankees farmhand Tim LaVigne yielded his only earned run of the season -- a game-winning homer in the Algodoneros' 4-3 loss to Mochis on Oct 23.
NEWS AND NOTES: Guasave reached double digits in hits during a three-game winning streak, recording 12 and 10 in back-to-back wins over Mochis and a season-high 19 in a 10-8 slugfest at Mazatlan on Oct. 26.
Aguilas de Mexicali
THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Aguilas won only one of six games this week to drop to 2-15. The lone victory came in a 9-2 triumph over the Tomateros on Oct. 24.
WHO'S HOT: Carlos Sievers stands only 5-foot-8, but he packed plenty of punch last week, homering in all three games he started. The designated hitter leads the league with seven homers and is 8-for-20 with four homers, six RBIs and six runs scored during a five-game hitting streak. ... Brandon Boggs (Rangers) is batting .350 (7-for-20) during a five-game hitting streak. He doubled in each of the first four games of the streak. ... Left-hander Abraham Elvira earned Mexicali's only win of the week, giving up a run on three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in five innings.
WHO'S NOT: Left-handed reliever Jorge Flores coughed up five runs on four hits and a walk in two frames. ... After not allowing a run in his first four appearances, Padres prospect Jared Wells surrendered three runs in his last three games. ... Former Durham Bull Brian Stokes lost two starts, giving up eight runs on 14 hits and five walks over 7 1/3 frames.
NEWS AND NOTES: The Aguilas rank eighth in runs scored (51) and allowed (112). Outfielder Fernando Perez (Devil Rays) has hit in four straight games since making his debut on Oct. 21.
Caneros de los Mochis
THE WEEK IN REVIEW: Los Mochis bookended a pair of wins around a four-game losing streak, including a 4-0 blanking of Obregon on Oct. 27. The Caneros are tied for first with the Tomateros with a 12-5 record.
GREAT CESAR'S GHOST!: Dionys Cesar has dominated as Halloween approaches, leading the league with a .403 batting average and ranking fifth with a .456 on-base percentage. Cesar has also reached base safely in all 15 games.
WHO'S HOT: Arturo Lopez (Padres) rebounded after a mediocre outing against Guasave on Oct. 23. The 24-year-old southpaw yielded a run on four hits and four walks in six innings and earned a win over Obregon on Oct. 28. His 1.80 ERA is tied for second in the league with Hermosillo's Francisco Campos. ... Saul Soto batted .381 this week, belting three homers and driving in four runs during a five-game hitting streak.
WHO'S NOT: Angels prospect Francisco Rodriguez, no relation to the parent-club's closer, was hammered in his only start this week, yielding six runs on seven hits and five walks over 4 2/3 frames on Oct. 26. ... Jose Acuna has one hit in his last four games.
OH, SNAP!: White Sox farmhand Jason Bourgeois went 0-for-4 to have his eight-game hitting streak snapped on Oct. 26. Bourgeois, who split 2007 between Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte, got hits in his last two games, and is batting .324.
NEWS AND NOTES: Los Mochis is the class of the league in pitching, leading the league with a 2.89 ERA, nearly a full run better than Culiacan (3.70). The Caneros also have fanned a league-best 133 batters.
Mayos de Navojoa
THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Mayos won four of six games to improve to 8-9. They are riding a three-game winning streak.
IS ANYBODY OUT THERE?: That's the question at Navojoa, which has drawn only 38,471 fans in 10 openings this season. That's almost half as many fans as the second-worst drawing team, Obregon.
WHO'S HOT: Former Richmond right fielder Doug Clark was one of the hottest hitters this week, batting .524 (11-for-21) with two homers and six RBIs. He went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and fell a triple shy of the cycle on Oct. 25 against Obregon. ... Adan Munoz is even hotter, leading the league with a .560 batting average. He has two homers and nine RBIs. ... Brandon Jones (Braves) is starting to heat up, going 7-for-19 (.368) in his last six games.
WHO'S NOT: Former Reds farmhand Scott Chiasson was hit hard in two of his three outings this week, giving up five runs on six hits and two walks in 2 1/3 innings. ... Braves first baseman Scott Thorman is in an 0-for-11 slide in his last three games, dropping his average to .203.
NEWS AND NOTES: The Mayos are the second-highest scoring team in the league, plating 92 runs in 17 games. They are averaging 5.4 runs per contest. ... The pitching staff has issued a league-high 69 walks, including 11 this week by Oswaldo Verdugo.
Naranjeros de Hermosillo
WEEK IN REVIEW: The Najaneros dropped four of five games and are third in the league with a 9-8 record.
WHO'S HOT: Marshall McDougall (Dodgers) is hitting at a .458 clip with two homers and five RBIs over the past six games. ... Francisco Campos yielded four runs on five hits with 11 strikeouts over 13 innings in two starts, but did not receive a decision in either outing.
WHO'S NOT: John Lindsey (Dodgers), who combined to strike out 94 times in 133 games with Double-A Jacksonville and Triple-A Las Vegas, has fanned 18 times in 16 games with the Naranjeros. ... Jose Luis Sandoval managed three singles in 24 at-bats, dropping his batting average from .366 to .277.
NEWS AND NOTES: Hermosillo has yielded a league-low three homers over 17 games. ... The Naranjeros have three steals in seven attempts -- both league lows.
Tomateros de Culiacan
WEEK IN REVIEW: The Tomateros went 5-1, including victories in their last four games, to improve to 13-5. They jumped into a first-place tie with Mochis.
WHO'S HOT: Alfredo Aceves became the first four-game winner with victories over Mexicali and Hermosillo this week. ... Jose Silva leads the league with six saves. ... Aaron Acosta lowered his league-best ERA to 1.71 with 5 2/3 shutout innings against Hermosillo on Oct. 27. ... Karim Garcia's 11-game hitting streak ended Sunday with an 0-for-3 performance.
WHO'S NOT: The Tomateros scored 12 runs during their four-game winning streak. ... Daniel Gonzalez went 3-for-18 in six games, lowering his batting average to .207.
NEWS AND NOTES: Culiacan has a league-leading four shutouts after tossing a pair this week. The Tomateros also own a league-low .236 batting average.
Venados de Mazatlan
WEEK IN REVIEW: The Venados went 3-3 to fall into seventh place with an 8-9 record.
WHO'S HOT: Neil Walker, the Pirates' first-round pick in 2004, has hit in 12 straight games. He is batting .409 with two homers and five RBIs over his last six contests. ... After hitting .194 in his first 10 games, Christian Quintero went 10-for-27 with two homers, four RBIs and five runs scored this week to raise his batting average to .276. ... Walter Silva went 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA and 15 strikeouts, including six shutout frames against Guasave on Oct. 28.
WHO'S NOT: Reliever Sixto Baez allowed four earned runs on six hits and two walks in one inning over three outings.
NEWS AND NOTES: Carlos Hines is a perfect 5-for-5 in save opportunities, with four coming in the last week. ... The Venados' last six games have all been decided by three runs or fewer.
IS THERE A DAY OFF?: Jose Luis Garcia, Jose Cobos and Mauro Nieblas are tied for the league lead with 10 appearances. Garcia appeared in five games this week.
Yaquis de Obregon
THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Yaquis are 9-8 after a 4-2 week and sit three games out of first place.
BOTTS-ULISM: The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Jason Botts (Rangers) hulked over the competition this week, batting .545 (12-for-22) with two homers and 12 RBIs in six games. The designated hitter/left fielder hit both homers on Oct. 23 and leads the league with a .630 on-base percentage and a .955 slugging percentage.
WHO'S HOT: Carlos Rivera batted .478 (11-for-23) with two homers and nine RBIs in six games. ... Hugo Castellanos (Cardinals) notched a pair of saves in three games and has yet to give up a run in eight appearances.
WHO'S NOT: Humberto Cardenas was hammered in his only appearance, allowing five runs on five hits and a walk in 2 1/3 innings on Oct. 23 against Navojoa. ... Luis Garcia has two hits in his last 20 at-bats and is batting .148. Iker Franco (Braves) has a hit in each of his last four games, but was only 4-for-18 (.222) this week.
