Roberts Returns in 9-0 Loss to Crawdads

Salisbury, Md. - The Hickory Crawdads (25-25) scored runs in six of nine innings to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds (21-30) 9-0 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Tuesday evening. Brian Roberts went 1-for-2 with a walk in his first rehab game with the Shorebirds. He is expected to play for the Shorebirds on Wednesday in the series finale.

Zach Cone tripled to open the second inning. Two batters later, Chris Grayson was hit on the helmet by a Matt Taylor pitch. Then, Kevin Torres singled up the middle to score both runners.

The Crawdads took a 3-0 lead in the third on a solo home run to straight away center field by Cone, his eighth of the year.

In the fourth, Hickory tacked on two runs. Jordan Akins hit a two out triple and scored on a throw down to second by Gabriel Lino to try and catch a runner stealing. Jhonny Gomez walked and scored on a throwing error by Taylor on a pickoff move to first.

The Crawdads added a run in the fifth, two runs in the seventh and a run in the ninth inning.

Gomez reached in all five plate appearances with three walks and two hits.

Crawdads starter Victory Payano earned the win over seven shutout innings. He struck out a career high 11 batters and walked just two.

Shorebirds starter Matt Taylor was pinned with the loss over five innings. He surrendered six hits and five earned runs. Williams Louico gave up two hits and two runs over two innings.

Zach Fowler entered in the eighth and fanned four batters over the final two innings.
