Trahan is D-backs top choice

Catcher could end up with Osprey if he signs contract
June 5, 2012
The Arizona Diamondbacks have selected high school catcher Stryker Trahan with their first pick in the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft on Monday.

Trahan, out of Acadiana High School in Louisiana, was regarded as the top high school catcher, and in the top three backstops available in the draft. This past spring, he hit .407 with six home runs, 30 RBIs and 22 stolen bases. The D-backs have had an eye on Trahan since last spring, and saw enough in his development to make him their first-round pick.

Trahan, a left-handed hitter who signed a NCAA National Letter of Intent to play baseball at Mississippi, has strong hands, a solid swing and a 6-foot-1, 220-pound frame which fits a catcher. Some scouts believe, though, that Trahan is destined to become a corner outfielder. Even then, though, his bat may be good enough to make that move and still have him be an everyday player, because in part of his athletic ability.

However, the D-backs front office believes that Trahan will be a backstop in the future.

"He's a good athlete," said Diamondbacks Director of Scouting Ray Montgomery. "He can run, he can throw ... obviously, he's going to have to do some work back there, but with the bat profile where it is, the position that he plays, and the fact that he hits left-handed, he's a pretty good package, and we're happy to get him with the 26th pick."

The draft continues with Rounds 2-15 taking place on Tuesday, and Rounds 16-40 on Wednesday.

The Osprey open their 2012 season at Billings on June 18, then return home for their Opening Weekend at home against Great Falls on June 22-24. Tickets for all Osprey games are now available at the MSO Hub Box Office, by phone at (406) 543-3300 and online at MissoulaOsprey.com.
