Giants Suffer 6-4 Loss To Modesto
SAN JOSE - The San Jose Giants scored four runs over the first three innings, but managed just one hit over the last five frames as Modesto rallied for a 6-4 victory on Friday evening at Municipal Stadium. The Nuts tied the game with a single run in the top of the fifth before scoring twice in the seventh inning to take the lead for good. The loss drops San Jose's overall record to 37-32 with one game remaining in the first half.
Adam Duvall (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) and Ricky Oropesa (2-for-4) had two hits each to lead the Giants offensive attack.
San Jose took a 4-3 lead into the fifth inning before Modesto tied it with an unearned run against Giants starter Ryan Bradley. Rafael Ortega led off with a bloop double down the right field line before Brett Tanos drew a one-out walk. Ortega and Tanos then executed a successful double steal when Kyle Parker struck out while the tying run scored when catcher Andrew Susac's throw bounced off the glove of the third baseman Duvall and down the left field line. Susac was charged with an error on the play as the Nuts drew even at 4-4.
Modesto then took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Reliever Mitchell Beacom issued a leadoff walk to Ortega to prompt a pitching change as Seth Rosin was summoned from the bullpen. Ortega then stole second before taking third when Cristhian Adames grounded out to shortstop. Tanos was up next and he grounded a single into left field plating Ortega with the go-ahead run. Then with two outs, Jared Clark hammered a double into the left field corner scoring Tanos all the way from first base to extend the Nuts lead to 6-4.
Modesto reliever Kurt Yacko (3-2) was credited with the win after tossing three scoreless innings over the fourth, fifth and sixth frames. Yacko finished his outing by setting down the last seven batters that he faced. Isaiah Froneberger then held the Giants off the scoreboard in the seventh and eighth innings. Froneberger issued a leadoff walk to Bobby Haney in the seventh after the Nuts took the lead, but quickly retired the next three hitters. Froneberger then struck out the side in a perfect bottom of the eighth.
Adam Jorgenson earned his 12th save of the year after pitching the bottom of the ninth. Haney singled with two outs to bring the potential tying run to the plate, but Jorgenson induced Alex Burg to fly out to left field ending the game.
Modesto initially took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first against Bradley. With two outs, Tanos singled before consecutive walks to Parker and Clark loaded the bases. Mark Tracy then lined a single to right plating both Tanos and Parker to make it 2-0.
San Jose immediately responded in the bottom of the first with five straight hits to begin the inning. Ryan Lollis led off with a single before Joe Panik ripped an RBI triple down the right field line. Duvall followed with a single up the middle to score Panik. Then after Oropesa singled, Susac delivered an RBI single to give the Giants a 3-2 lead.
Both teams scored a run in the third inning as Tanos tied the game with his first home run of the season. In the bottom of the frame, Duvall started the rally with a double to deep left before Oropesa singled to put runners on the corners. Duvall then scored when Susac bounced into a double play.
San Jose threatened to add to their lead in the bottom of the fourth as Burg doubled with two outs, but he was stranded in scoring position when the next batter, Lollis, struck out. The Giants would then not record another hit until Haney's two-out single in the ninth.
Bradley worked the first five innings for San Jose yielding four runs (three earned) on four hits. He walked a career-high six and struck out three. Beacom (0-1) was saddled with his first loss of the year after he was charged with the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh.
