Ozoria, Guerrero Lead Loons to Win
The Loons are now 10-6 in Ozoria's starts this season. The Dominican right-hander struck out three batters and walked just one to improve to 5-4 this season. He surrendered an unearned run in the second inning following an error by third baseman Jesse Bosnik and an RBI single by K.C. Hobson. Then in the third, he gave up a two-out triple to Carlos Perez, then an RBI single to Chris Hawkins.
The Loons bullpen followed with three scoreless frames. Juan Noriega allowed just one hit and struck out two in two innings. Mike Thomas followed with a hitless, scoreless ninth to rack up his third save of the year.
Pedro Guerrero tripled with one out and later scored in the third on an RBI infield single by Scott Schebler to plate the Loons' first run.
Great Lakes trailed 2-1 entering the fourth when they struck for four runs against Lansing starter Justin Nicolino. O'Koyea Dickson, Joe Winker and Bosnik strung together three consecutive singles with one out to load the bases. Then with two outs, Guerrero singled to left bringing home two. Left fielder Kevin Pillar threw home on the play, allowing Bosnik and Guerrero to advance to second and third. Delvis Morales followed with his second hit of the season against a left-hander, scoring two.
All five Loons runs in the game came with two outs.
Nicolino (3-2) was charged with five runs (all earned) over four innings for the loss. He did strike out seven. Bryan Longpre followed in relief and allowed just one hit and no runs in four innings. Aleson Escalante followed with a perfect ninth inning. For the second straight night, Lansing pitchers retired the final 11 Loons batters faced.
The Loons (6-8 second half, 40-44 overall) and Lugnuts (7-7, 53-29) conclude their three-game series Friday night at Cooley Law School Stadium. Game time is 7:05pm. Right-hander Gustavo Gomez (5-6, 5.05 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Loons against stand-out righty Aaron Sanchez (7-0, 0.63). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com.
