Tigers Fall Short in Extras
Connecticut scored a run in the third inning. SS Jordan Dean (2-5) tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by DH Zach Kirksey (0-1) for a 1-0 Connecticut lead.
Mahoning Valley scored two runs in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. SS Robel Garcia (1-4) doubled and scored on a single by LF Aaron Siliga (4-5). He went to second base when LF Tyler Naquin (1-4) was hit by a pitch and to third base when 1B Charlie Valerio (1-4) flew out to center field. Siligia scored on a wild pitch.
In the fourth inning the Scrappers scored two runs for a 4-1 advantage but the Tigers cut the lead to one run with a two-run seventh inning. 1B Juaner Aguasvivas (1-5) led off the seventh inning with a double and 2B Devin Travis (0-4) was hit by a pitch. RF Patrick Smith (2-4) laid down a sacrifice bunt for an out and both runners advanced to scoring position. Aguasvivas scored on a wild pitch and Travis moved to third base.
He scored on a single by SS Jordan Dean (2-5) to slim the Scrappers lead to 4-3.
The Tigers tied the game at 4-4 in the eighth inning. CF Jake Stewart (0-3) walked and went to second base on a sacrifice bunt by 3B Tyler Hanover (1-4). He scored on a line drive single to right field by LF Danry Vasquez (1-5).
In the 11th inning Scrappers 3B Erik Gonzalez (0-3) walked and stole second base. After Garcia struck out, Siliga was intentionally walked. CF Tyler Naquin singled to center field to score Gonzalez for a 5-4 win.
TIGER TRACKS: Sunday's game was the first for the Tigers in extra innings. There are only two teams in the NYPL that have yet to play a game in extra innings more than a quarter of the way through the season: the Tri-City ValleyCats and Aberdeen Iron Birds.
The Tigers and Mahoning Valley Scrappers finish their series on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Charlie Gillies (0-0, 1.50) gets the start for Connecticut against RHP Jake Sisco (0-1, 3.32) for Mahoning Valley.
